Realistic Textures in photoshop

    Anyone knows some good tutorials for realistic textures in photoshop :)?
    I heard you can take pictures of real life textures (Walls, ground, grass) And then do some photoshop magic and make it look flat and good :)
    So it would be nice if someone could help me find a tutorial, i cant really find any good ones.

    You know someone's gonna come here with a "LMGTFY" link, right? If you've already tried Google, you should say that and say what was wrong with the ones you found because last time I searched for this, I found millions of results.

    Not a tutorial, but you should get dDo. It's a photoshop plug in which can (more or less) automatically generate insanely high quality textures. The original (legacy) version is free: http://dev.quixel.se/ddo

    (There's also another one for normal maps called nDo, again, the original version is free).

    dDo sounds promising. Im installing it right now! Is it free for commercial use?

    This is a broad topic. Do you mean tiling textures for environments or textures for objects? Because those are two completely different processes. If you want to get more specific I can see if I can't help you.

    In general I'd say to just get your feet wet and practice, and you'll start to figure it out.

    EDIT: I'd actually not recommend DDO before you know how to texture without it. I'm not being pretentious, the end result just looks like it's obviously made with DDO unless you know how to adjust it to fit your own style.

    I mean tiling texures for enviroment, sorry for not mention it.
    And there is some problems with dDo, and im not the only one who has it, so i dont think im going to use that :)

    Okay cool. Once again that's still a pretty broad topic but easier to deal with.

    First of all I'd strongly recommend getting NDo2 or crazybump.

    In general the easiest way to make realistic textures is to use photos. Definitely take a look at cgtextures.com. To make a texture tiled used the "offset" filter in photoshop and fix the seams.

    Photos directly don't really work with some materials that rely heavily on their surface response more then their surface detail, like smooth metal, plastics, rubber and probably a bunch of other stuff. In general you can be a bit creative with photo textures, and just use a photo for a normal map, then get AO and cavity maps out of that normal map and use another image for the background to layer those maps on top of.

    To make your maps really good you need to have good synergy with all your maps (mostly normal, diffuse, and spec). Photos will very easily get you the diffuse, but the other two are trickier. You might be able to get a good normal map out of ndo or crazybump. However, the more time consuming route of manually creating your normal map from greyscale or in zbrush also gets the best and most reliable results. With specular maps, you can start with your diffuse but you need to adjust it so that it has the proper surface response you would expect.

    That's not really a link to a tutorial but just what I have to say from experience, and I'm sure most game artists would agree with me. If you are looking on how to create something specific like wood or metal for example, I might be able to find some tutorials. Check out that polycount link though, it has a ton of info.     I am in familiar with photoshop in advance. i saw a 3 minutes tutorial about tiling, and now i think i have figured it all out! heh, sorry for the brad topic.
    I took the picture myself and made some adjustments! Tell me what you think! :)

    You DID read who was using it, right? Crytek, Ubisoft, Blizzard. Heck, just look at the results on the page. :)
    It's industry standard. Not everything's going to come out the even remotely close to the same. And, yes it's free for commercial use (according to google). You could just do a quick find search on the EULA just to be sure, though.

    If you want a shortcut to texturing, dDo is it. Heck, even if you don't want a shortcut, dDO is worth it.

    I like making things with photoshop, and when it comes to texturing i want it to do it myself :) But i may use nDo for bump maps.
    But i still think that the texture i have made looks fabulous, and i learn more making them myself :)!
