I know you are going to all hate me for this but I downloaded Unity last night expecting I could start trying to learn then but of course it was a larger download than I thought so had to wait till now.

I decided to go to the Unity BEGINNER area to watch the lesson on building a game with a rolling ball that strikes objects as the game. Seemed an extremely simple game on the face of it so thought that would be good to start with but from the outset, problems. The person giving the lesson says to double click slowly on the game object to rename it and in the video he does that on the screen. Well, for a start, his startup screen is a heck of a lot different to mine but no worries, I got around that. However, there is no game object in the centre of the screen to double click on slowly. Now I admit I am on day one. Where is this thing that shows on HIS screen that doesnt in mine? Is it no longer there because he is using an older Unity and I am not?

    Thanks for your help.

    Greg.

Did you follow the step directly before? He did (in the hierarchy panel) Create -> 3D Object -> Plane. This created the GameObject, which he then renamed.

Thanks for the reply. I was following step by step but when I opened a new project etc it looked nothing like what he had at all yet I was doing what he did. So when I created the Plane, the GameObject just wasnt there at all. In case you were wondering, I have the latest free version for now. I need to know I can stick at it to buy it. I only downloaded it within the last 48 hours and this is why I thought the things he did were different to what shows up on my screens. Still, I cannot see why the GameObject never appears. Is there something I am supposed to do to make it show? Even the Plane was nothing at all like his one.

In some of the tutorials there's a disclaimer indicating which unity version it was made for. If you downloaded the latest version you'll be in 5.3.x. Check that the tutorial isn't for 4.x. Other than that, a screenshot might help as I'm having a hard time visualizing what you're expecting to see.

Unless you really want to get rid of the Unity splash screen before a game starts, there is no need to ever purchase the Pro license (unless you make over 100k/year using Unity). The pro license and free license have the exact same features.
