Is is possible to assign as a texture a QuickTime file that has an alpha channel? I have compressed my QT movie with Alpha channel enabled using the PNG compressor and also uncompressed-no joy so far. Any help? Any info much appreciated.

videos are encoded as theora and do not contain any alpha
You would need pro and a plugin to use any other codec.

Many thanks for the quick response--one thing I really like about this forum.

Can I bother you with one more question? I do have the pro version, and have an upcoming project that would benefit from alpha-channeled animated textures. Can you point me to the plugin you mentioned, or some other resource that would make this doable? I'm not picky on how the transparent effect is applied, I just need to get 'er done. Thanks again!

I wasn't quoting any specific existing plugin for this actually.

There is a QT plugin but it is known to not work on Windows so you might have to check that and if the sources are available fix it in case you want it on windows.

Also, you can not use plugins in the webbuild, just standalones, just to mention that upfront

Thanks, that's very helpful--saves me a lot of dead ends. The tip about the web build is especially helpful, since for my application (Unity running in a multi-projector 5-meter dome theater) I have to use the web build.

I am working a different angle now using animated flip-book type textures on particles--I think I can get this to work that way. Thank you again for your quick and helpful answers!

Do any of you know if there is any other way to create an animated texture with transparency?

the normal UV animation based "image strip" animation would offer you that, if its just for image animation.

I'm experimenting with animated .gif files and transparency, but no joy yet. I'll post here if I get it work.

hmm.. image strip animation could maybe work... however, i need alot of frames to be played. What im trying to achive is one of those science fiction semitransparent monitors that shows on both sides, with text and stuff beeing animated, to create some life in my scene! Ill post here also if I find some sort of solution to this

I think I would recommend trying a custom shader that would use some reserved colors for transparency. So for example 1,1,0 would be completely transparent, 1,0,1 would be 50% transparency.

You can then generate an ogg theora video that contains these colors in areas that you want transparent.

Somewhat complex, but could work I believe.
