Questions about collaboration

    Hello all,

    I have a game idea and I want to begin conceiving it. But my concerns are about collaboration, and I'm asking your experience.(Since I'm a dev) Is it easy to find 3d modellers/artists ? If you ever tried to recruit people, how many applications did you had ? Did you ever dropped a project because you didn't find someone to work with you ?

    If you're offering appropriate amounts of money, it's not hard to find artists at all. If you're expecting them to work on your project for free, or for some potential money way later, then it's pretty hard to find them.

    Collaboration is you and a someone else making something cool. For instance a 1GAM, LD or GJ.... Recruiting is you trying to pay someone to make stuff for a project you are developing on.

    If you don't intend to throw money at someone immediately then you aren't planning to do anything commercial. *

    * does not apply to Bro Status Friend cards, which can be played from the deck for free.

    And for most games from inexperienced devs it won't pay tomorrow's rent either.

    For free work your best bet is a friend who is also passionate about the project. (Or passionate about you. My wife is an accomplished artist, and frequently works on my projects. I would not suggest free art as a valid reason to choose a mate.)

    Another option is to try students at your local university or art school. Their is no guareentee on the quality of work you get, but many students will work for free or cheap to add to their portfolio.

    What does this mean? Everyone is a "developer". Do you mean you're a programmer?

    With money it is easy.

    Else its more or less impossible to find decent artists, and if you find some its even harder to keep them on the project for a longer period.

    Perhaps consider seeing how far you can get solo. Often times you can be more agile alone. You can freely move forward with anything without waiting for anyone, and make massive changes without worrying about stomping on people's toes. Collaborating with people can be the most stressful part of development. It gets even hairier if you're trying to do revenue share. For my own project, getting help would be a last resort.
