Question on accepted 2D & 3D files

I've spent some time checking the unity forum manuals for this specific issue. I found the 2017 easier to understand. However when I check the youtube, the do not show where they get their files from. I tested both .3ds and fbx. I know fbx worked because other tutorials have shown this before. I carefully tested .3ds and found that so far only .fbx works. So my question is does .3ds work on older versions? Perhaps only in 2017 versions? Has anyone tried these 2 in 2017? I would be grateful if anyone happens to know.

Are there any 2D pictures / formats that cannot be read by Unity?

ok thank you. The 2D link is clear. The 3D link you sent is actually the one I already found earlier. I didn't find that unity was able to read the .obj file. Perhaps I should provide feedback to them.
