I'm working on a PC title, been doing mobile until now. I have two questions about textures:
    1. Whats is the maximum supported texture resolution on modern video cards? Can I use 4K or 8K textures and be sure that they will load properly on 3-5 year old computers? (I know I can have multiple resolutions but that's not the question:)
    2. Is it safe to use ASTC texture compression? in terms of video card or driver support on older computers...
    Thanks!

Unity currently doesn't support importing at anything higher than 4096x4096. ASTC isn't an option available for PC.

Thank you for that info Eric5h5.
Awww.........so my idea of having a scene with a 5000x5000 texture image, is now out of the question.
Oh well, time to reduce it then. :p

If only Unity supported the technology of 6-7 years ago, at the very least! We'd be able to use 8192x8192 textures. Or supporting the current tech, twice that in both dimensions. But no, we have to live with mobile limitations even on the desktop :p

(Who do we complain to? I have zero faith in the Feedback section ever doing any good.)

Thanks for the quick answer. My project is set for PC in the build settings and I can see the ASTC option in the texture options (and it works in the editor), will it not work when exporting?
And if not - will it be available in unity 5?

Change the texture overrides from default to standalone, and you can see the options available on that platform. ASTC support depends mostly on OpenGL, Direct3D, and graphics hardware supporting it, not so much on Unity. You can see ASTC in the editor because it would make using Unity a tad difficult if you couldn't. ;) But it's a simulation and not "real".
