question about 2D or 3D defaults

    Hey guys, This is my first post so I hope it's in the right place.

    I'll try to make this quick,
    I'm making two versions of the same game, one's a normal 2D platform game (Super Mario Bros.), and the other's a platformer, but rendered in 3D (like Trine), before I get stuck into a project then work out I did it wrong and had to start again... I figured I'd better check here. When creating a new project, you get the choice of 2D or 3D "defaults", now if I go with 2D, since there's no Z-movement in my game, will I still be able to use 3D models for my assets? Or am I better off choosing 3D and just ignoring the Z-Axis?

    project 2D/3D setting is mainly for sprite games and you can change it later. For Trine style pick 3D

    even with 3d you can make 2d, putting sprites on planes and stuff, maybe orthographic camera.. alot of 2d games were made with unity before unity had a dedicated 2d systems

    The only thing the 2D preset does is put the scene view in 2D mode by default and make textures import as sprites by default. It doesn't actually change the way anything works. You can always toggle 2D scene view manually at any time, and import textures in other formats at any time. The 2D preset just makes creating typical sprite games a little more convenient.

    In Unity, you actually don't need to commit to making a 2d or 3d platformer.
