I'm befunkled by the free vs pro features. Are we able to publish to Windows Phone 8 with the free version or do you need to pay for the Pro version to do it?

Windows Phone addon is free in Unity (both Free or Pro), there's no such fee as $400.

A little over a year ago the basic versions of mobile addons (iOS, Android, and maybe wp8) were $400 for each addon. This meant that with the free version of Unity you would have to shell out $400 for the ability to develop iOS, then another $400 for Android, and so on. They have since removed those fees and included all mobile development targets in the free version.

As it stands now, if you purchase Unity Pro, you get wp8 pro for free. If you have pro and you want to publish to iOS or Android with pro features, then you have to pay $1500 for each pro addon.

I (and probably many others) feel that this is Unity's single biggest problem. The pro vs free vs pro addon upgrade fees are super confusing and seem a bit like you are paying 2 or 3 times for the same functionality. Unity really needs to streamline its pay model if it wants to remain as competitive as it has in the past. With Unreal going to $20/month (with 5% royalty) I think you are going to see lots of poor indie devs make that switch. That is a much easier pill to swallow than ~$4500 package that Unity is requiring to use it's high end features.

I'm running 4.3.4 and when I try to build for Android or iOS I get a licensing error. So I don't know. Their website doesn't help, it seems to contradict itself on what's free, what's in Pro and what's in Pro with an add-on, or maybe I'm reading it wrong. Either way it's not very clear. I'd consider Unreal but the trouble there is it has no Asset store, which is an enormous convienence for a lot of developers with no artist buddy to come to the rescue.
