Who knows.. something that is affordable and competitive. Unity doesn't ask for 5% royalties, so $20 is too cheap. I'm thinking more in the $49.95 a month range that gives you full access to the editor and build for all platforms.

And for all those who use Unity free, I don't think this amount is too exhorbitant to consider a subscription.

If im' not wrong you pay for major upgrades V3 to V4 , V4 to V5, but yes all upgrades in a version are free.

This thread should be closed since the official statement is that nothing has changed and thus Unity doesn't see any urge to change it's pricing...

The way I see it, Unity licensing is not bad at all... in many ways it's ridiculously awesome. Of course UE licensing is very appealing as well, I like that you can get "pro" for pennies, but in the long run if for some reason you make enough to make a living, UE is more expensive.

Plus Unity can't just change the license, it wouldn't be fair for people who spent full price on Unity, and also pay a % fee? I mean giving everyone their money back and start a new license would be kind of suicidal.

Unity could not charge a fee to those with full Unity license. And change Unity free with a cheap subscription and a % fee. If people don't want to buy the pro license, unity gets the monthly subscription money plus the % fee (if there's any user income)... and if people buy Unity pro to get rid of the fee... well isn't that what Unity does already? This way no one would get screwed too much, and people can stop comparing once for all... but honestly I think it's insane people are unhappy with current Unity license method, how more benevolent can you get?

Whatever new Unity licensing will be (if will be any new at all) should be a contra offer for Unreal4 and Crytek one.

Notice also UE4 cost nothing if you make less that 3k per quarter, and this is super nice for starters and indie. They basically, give UE4 for free, and in a long term UE4 have a chance to gain more, very very smart and frankly is a win/win situation.

I don't agree with guys who said those thread should be close. We should discuss this in all aspects.

This community made Unity what is today, and is started with community. Unity should not ignore this. In the moment they will ignore community is game over.

You won't be attracting any hobbyists (AKA: The majority of free users) with a %150 price increase on UE4.

They made mobile basic licenses free. Can't see why they couldn't just do the same thing here.

I am new to unity but experienced developer. I would subscribe tomorrow for 50$ per month for all platforms and free updates with NO royalty fees. Its fair.

I have to wonder how much flexibility Unity really has on pricing, a lot of the functionality is 3rd party middleware. Unity's agreements with those providers may severely limit what exactly Unity can do when it comes to pricing.

I want Unity to pay me $20 per month for using it. They surely make enough money from the Asset Store.
As I tell friends and colleagues about it this should be more than fair.

It was just in an official statement that UT makes hardly any special amount of money from the asset store, at least for a large company like them. I assume it's only a few 10k a year.

If you were to say monthly, I think that might be closer to truth

I think all this talk to taking pricing to anywhere close to UE4 or Cry is nonsense. Unity will not go to that level, and its ridiculous to think they will. Maybe a 30-50% decrease in current pricing might be closer to what they would consider, and I think that would be perfect. Seriously, you want them to go from $1500 to $20/month? really? Would that make any business sense?

Personally, with 0% royalty I think $20 is too cheap.

But converting 100 000 free users to $30 or $49.95 a month, definately makes business sense.

and why would they do that? You know there are assets in the store made from free users that probably wouldn't be there. So they already make money off free users.

Because for 30 bucks a month I'm sure many free users would want all the features of Unity pro?

If that's the pro subscription, then yeah, it would, but if your talking removing free, then bad idea

In addition, if the price is too high, Unity could outright lose customers to Unreal or CryEngine, and then not get a cent.

Unity is worth the money. But people can get another engine for ~26% of the price.
