Procedurally Paint Trees

    Is there any documentation on how to procedurally paint trees in Unity 2.1 or Unity 2.5? i.e. rather than using the terrain editor to manually place trees throughout the terrain, I want to populate the terrain with trees through scripts which base tree populations on other data.

    A Sept 2008 reply to http://forum.unity3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=14503 says that at that point it was possible to paint trees on a terrain using scripts but that it uses undocumented APIs. Does anyone know if these APIs have been documented yet?

    If it's not possible to procedurally populate a terrain with trees, can anyone suggest a work around for this? I'm trying to build a forest that is generated based on mathematical models of tree populations. I'd really like to use Unity for this project. I'd been using Multiverse but it has other issues that I'd like to avoid.
