Okay, these can not be uncommon problems so I hope someone can direct me to what I'm doing wrong.
My first problem and most important at the moment since I'm laying in the base layout of the world is that my terrain is "Glossy" no matter what I do. I've googled this problem and have not found a solution as of yet. So here is the situation, the first terrain I made was just a fast heightmap I made in photoshop just so I could get a feel of the software, I imported this and then imported a few of my custom textures (1024 jpg and 512 jpg) and some greyscale corresponding textures to use as normals just so I could quickly experiment with ground cover and painting terrain. This looked okay in the editor but when I built it for an online test and ran it everything looked like it was coated in ice or glass (very "glossy"). I've since moved on and made a much better heightmap from World Machine and imported that, this time I took a suggestion I read from a discussion somewhere that perhaps the answer was to make the textures PNGs with black alpha layers, so I did this next, I've tried the textures by themselves and with normals attached. I forget where it's located but my "smoothness" is also set as low as it goes. So what is going on here? What do I need to do?

My second issue comes from a test of an FBX model import with textures. I get the same glossy problem with it, however, I also have an issue of the player controller "slipping" around on the floor and also getting "stuck" in a wall that I bump up against. Any ideas?

I will say one thing: I have not used character controllers for a long time, and the reason was weird behaviour on slopes, so I recommend staying away from them. With that in mind, I am not sure how well they work in 5.0, haven't done much testing. The stuck objects issue also sounds familiar, don't remember where I got that issue myself... :D

As for your glossy objects issue, this is because that's the default setting for the terrain's material. (Makes no physical sense to be honest, what realistic terrain has a shiny metal highlight?!) Using a custom material should help this, as you can change anything about such material, including changing the gloss and specular color. Glossy materials on FBX files is normal too, just change the settings on your materials to remove the gloss in parts you don't want it.

Okay so when you say "material" I'm assuming you mean THIS material? Because I don't see any relevant settings in the texture window, nor do I see how you would add a material from the texture window (which in my opinion seems a bit odd, but alright) Material.jpg http://imgur.com/a/euNaV#2

I'm still lost on this, I assumed that was the material you were referring to, so I created a new material, super simple I just made it a medium range gray, and not really anything else as you can see. Then I changed the material type to custom and tried to drag my new texture to the box. Other then turning my terrain gray this is what tells me...... MaterialWTF.jpg

Oh yea, forgot to say that you need specific terrain shaders! (OOPS!) :D

There should be three in Nature/Terrain, of whihc you can then pick the standard shader or one of the others. :)
