preferences greyed out

    I am a using a MacBook Air.

    Can someone please tell me why the in the Unity menu (at the top left-hand corner), the "about Unity", "preferences", "modules" and "manage licence" menu items are all greyed out?
    How can I fix this?

    i think i have Unity 5.1.1f.... not sure if that helps.....
