Hi everyone,

my name is Evi, we're at Cubix Studio are trying to make a simple short web game using Unity Engine.
(we're mostly an artist, with no programmer, so we aim at making simple games with simple mechanic)

our first game is just a clone of a mini-game "Pyoro" from Wario Ware (GBA),
hopefully it's not that hard to do, since this is our first try.
but we will recreate all the asset with our own stuff :D
the main character is going to be a female, her name is Pyurin :p

Here are some of the pre-production of the character,
we really having so much fun in the making of this project whenever we're not doing contract work :

i put the rest of the images on our blog if you interested to see it
(we scrape some of our earlier concepts though) :

http://cubixstudio.blogspot.com/

thanks for reading wish us luck,
i'll keep updating and asking questions in this forum :D

Hi Evi,

welcome to the forums!!! That looks really nice - I like that style! It's gonna be exciting to see how this turns into a game...

So - good luck, and looking forward to the questions ;-)

Sunny regards,
Jashan

The art is awesome, but you may want to consider changing the name. "Purin" is what they call the Pokemon Jigglypuff in Japan, and you're already using a modified name of another Nintendo product.

Oh - that's a good point. I just recently read about Nintendo making someone take their Maryo Kart and other Nintendo clones off the web (I think those were for the palm or something), so it's sure a good idea to use a unique name... well, maybe that's a different story because those really were 100% clones of Nintendo games with only slightly modified Nintendo names, but I guess it's just a good idea to be a little careful with those things...

Say "trACEon" ;-)

To be honest about the design, I really preferred the traditional animation style character drawings to the japanese ones. Still looks cool, though.

@holtsch:
thanks a lot for the warm welcome
... yeah i bet we gonna ask a lot in the forum once we
start doing the programming :p

@Jessy:

thanks for the suggestion, you're totally right,
kinda dangerous to use another nintendo stuff :p
for now i'll change the title to "Poppin".
hopefully there's no pokemon with that name

@aaronsullivan:

i was wondering about that too when we design the character,
whether we should design using anime/japanese influence style or using an american cartoon style.
Today we totally rework the character, and came up with new character concept.

thank's a lot for all the feedback,
here is the image for the day (new character concept, rough BG color and some creatures design):
i'll just group everything in one image.

Tomorrow, expect to see 3D stuff, i guess we gonna move to the next step (creating 3D stuff).

Thanks you

I agree with Aaron, the new character is really well done and now stands out as something individual, whereas the first designs are just more anime influenced things in a world awash with anime influenced things. I really love the bug concepts too. Nice work, goodluck with it.

Definitely awesome.

...and I THINK Poppin is unique enough from "Poppins" that you may be able to stay out of trouble...Disney is notoriously litigious, though.

Evi -- welcome to the Unity community!

I loved your content packs for TGE. If you ever decide to release content packs for Unity (or update the Male Female content packs for Unity... I had trouble importing the FBX files with animations) I'll be first in line with my credit card.

The artwork for this project looks great (as usual). Keep up the good work!

We create a model sheet to help us in doing the 3d model of Poppin, we decide to make her a little bit younger based on earlier concept. With this model sheet building 3D model of her should be a lot easier.
Not sure if you're notice it, she's carrying a yoyo for her weapon :p

also we manage to finish the floor model / 3D block for Poppin to stand on,
this might be the simplest asset from this game, it's only a cube with painted texture :D

thanks a lot defmech :D

here's more update from us:
today we got some time to do a mockup screen of how the games going to look like,
also the background is probably around 75% finished, quite happy with the result.

And, finally the the first creature's texture is done, this is probably the complex model among the other 2 creatures (bonus bug special bug). hopefully it looks ok :p

stay tuned for more updates 8)

and we'll see if we can implemented it later in the game.

btw, sorry no updates for today, we're quite busy with another project :p

first is the 2nd creature, actually this is pretty easy to do, we just don't have the time to finish it until today:

second one is Poppin's weapon, a super duper magical yoyo :p :

a gif animation of it, just for fun:

more updates tomorrow (hopefully)

thanks a lot Moldorma :D

sorry for the lack of update in the past 2 weeks, we've been very busy with another project,
and whenever we have spare time we spent it on learning Unity engine tutorial.
(which... for a bunch of artists like us, is quite a challenging task,
good thing that one of our member knows javascript a little bit :p
)

This updates probably going to be the last art updates from us, since all of
the art assets are pretty much done.

We also get a help from a fantastic composer, Nino Rajacic,
who will help us for doing the background music and all the special fx sound :D

please visit his site to check out more of his awesome works:

http://www.ninorajacic.co.nr/

ok, now without further ado, here is Poppin :

also one more background art, a night time in the village :

and also our first prototype..
you will need Unity Web Player to be able to see it (this is basically "Not Playable" yet, so don't expect too much when you see it :p),
we just want to show you how far we're right now with the game prototype itself:
(btw this doesn't work on some PC, the creature seems melting, no background etc...., but works ok in Mac, we're not sure why ????)

click on the image to run the first prototype:

please stay tuned for more updates, we're having fun making this project hehehehe.....

This doesn't work for me (I'm on Windows right now). It just crashes and looks weird. Here's a screen of it.

edit: hmm, I'm starting to think my unity plugin might have stopped working today. :/

Dock, thanks a lot for testing it (i hope it won't crash your PC),
yeah looks like it doesn't work on most PC,
i notice that:

- on ATI card it works ok (but the background dissapear)
- on Nvidia Card (creature seems melting/tearing the screen, and no background)
- on Mac (works ok, that the screenshot that i capture from mac)

i'll do a screen comparison in a minute.....

Yikes! Please do this:

1) Go to Start->Run and enter "dxdiag" without the quotes
2) Click Save All Information and save the file it generates
3) Report a new bug, and include:
---The problematic web player
---The dxdiag file
---The OS version you're using (like WinXP SP2)
4) Upgrade to the latest drivers from nVidia.com and see if the problem still occurs

Thanks Sam,
i just ask my friend who use different Card (ATI NVIDIA) to give me their dxdiag and i send it using Help->Report a Problem,

i hope that's the correct way to report bug.
here is what i send:

Code (csharp):
1.
2. 1) Provide a summary of the issue:
3. - Object/mesh seem to tear the screen / leave traces when they moves on screen
4. - Background image dissapear
5. - Everything works fine on Mac, Firefox/Safari (Problem only happens on PC Machine, ATI  NVIDIA card with latest driver)
6.
7. 2) Steps to Reproduce: Detail the steps taken to produce the bug.
8. Play this on a PC machine:
9. http://www.cubixstudio.com/unity/PoppinProto01.html
also more screenshots:

PC with NVIDIA card (latest nvidia driver, Win XP-64bit):

PC with ATI card (latest ati driver, Win XP SP2):

On ATI, the trace/tearing/melting problem dissapear, it's just no background displayed :p

thanks :D

I replied to your bug report, but to summarize: for the background camera, you're using Normalized Viewport Rectangle that is larger than the screen. On Direct3D (hence Windows) we don't handle that case correctly, producing undefined results. I'll see what we can do (the problem is that on D3D the viewport can't legally be partly outside the window), but for the meantime just set the rectangle of your background camera so that it's inside the window.

Sam Aras,
thanks a lot for your help, that solves ALL of my problem :
- the "Normalize Camera" to (0,0,1,1) fix the problem with disappearing background.
- Updating Unity from 2.01 to 2.02 fix the problem with trailing/melting issue on Windows Web Player.
thank you so much....

...now for the Poppin updates itself, this is how far we are right now,
this time it's playable, with a simple score display using DebugConsole (thanks to jeremyace for his handy script, it's very useful), btw i can get 20610 for my highest score :p

here is the Poppin Prototype 02 link:

http://www.cubixstudio.com/unity/PoppinProto02.html

still have many things to do, our future TO DO LIST:
- Adding Bug Bonus Bug Special to restore Destroyed Block
- Adding Animation for Poppin + All Bug
- Change the Yoyo Design (right now it looks too simple when the yoyo rotates)
- Adding Day/Night cycle for the background
- Adding Particle Effect
- Adding Music Sound FX
- Adding Menu/Welcome Screen
- Adding Game Over Screen
- Adding / Saving HighScore

i guess we will take it slow from now, since mostly it's gonna be scripting work (except Animation some graphical change :p).

also we are open for contract work if you / your company need help with any art assets (from 2D concept to 3d).
here is our short info ( http://forum.unity3d.com/viewtopic.php?t=10691 )
