    Hello everyone,

First and foremost thanks for your interest.

We do indeed have a working Unity Plug-in for Windows/MacOS and mobile (iOS/Android).We still have a couple points we want to address before releasing it, but we are planning on making it available on the Asset store in a near future (before the end of the year).
There should be 2 versions of the plugin :
    • A free version allowing you to use only FX packs from the Asset store (those will be highly customizable, of course).
    • A fixed price (or subscription?) version. The price would depend on the platform(s) needed and this version would allow you to play effects of your own design.
We are still mainly targeting AAA studios for full integration of PopcornFX, but we're doing our best to have something more accessible and to be more clear on the business models.

Again, thank you for your interest.

    Hey guys,
    Popcorn dev, here. :)

I feel like there's a couple things I should clarify.
    • CParticleEvolver_SPH : This is a completely experimental feature, it's not usable, yet.
We don't know when it's going to be.
    • Custom materials : This unfortunately doesn't mean what you think it means. It's not a usable feature at the moment either and those aren't Unity materials, anyway.
We may be able to do something like that in the future, but the way we're allowed to integrate into Unity via the plugin interface is too restrictive at the moment.
Additionally, we have a Trello you can vote on for this kind of stuff: https://trello.com/b/Z1q9xz72/popcornfx-roadmap
The columns relevant to the Unity plugin are "Runtime" and of course "Unity Plugin".

    Cheers,

    Hey guys!

Great news, we finally released version 1.6 of our editor and coming along with it is : wait for it...
The public beta of the Unity plugin! Yay!

Now, things to keep in mind : this is an evaluation version so it's watermarked and only the windows binary is included.
DX11 rendering is still at an early stage. It works, but there might be some bugs. Don't hesitate to shoot us an email or send me a PM if you spot some problems.
Also, the proper documentation for the plugin isn't there just yet. We're working on it. There's a readme file with a basic howto, though.

That is all, you can find the download links to the editor and the demo project including the plugin here: http://www.popcornfx.com/download/

Feel free to let us know what you think,
    Best Regards,

    Raph

    Well, that's unfortunate.
I can't seem to be able to reproduce the crash, though.
I just left the scene looping overnight and it was still going strong this morning. Do you have any additional info about how to reproduce it or how it crashes?

    Hello everyone,

Breaking news, the plugin is on the asset store!
You'll find it in particle systems: "PopcornFX Windows Plugin for Unity"
(mobile versions & content packages coming soon! the free watermarked version - still available for testing - will be updated very soon to match the asset store version.)

Please don't hesitate to share your feedbacks.

Thank you ZJP for highlighting this change. We decided to keep things as simple as possible:
Thus, there is no more plans for an asset-store specific version of the effects.
The effects created with the free editor (http://www.popcornfx.com/editor/) can be used with both the free demo version (watermarked) and the paying one.

No tricks, the same effects will work the same way, and there will always be a free version of the editor!

So you can customize existing effects and create your own. Please note that we require users interested in distributing their own effects to contact us first.

We can't wait to discover what you guys will be creating with PopcornFX!

This is written on the asset store , what does that means ?

The price of 250$ for a pro tool is great i think for small companies, but for hobbyst, UE4 will be the better choice as the engine has natively such advanced tool already without needing to pay.

"Due to the public API limitations, some features cannot be implemented in Unity yet." means that the public API of Unity doesn't allow us yet to acces all the render pass and features we would need to deliver the full fledge of PopcornFX.

We also have a plugin coming for UE4! Depending on the effects and performances that you are targetting, you'll face limitations with existing particle systems, either in Unity or Unreal (or other engine). That's why we created a dedicated middleware and we really want to improve it thanks to your feedbacks.

Is there a more ellaborate description of the limitations and the results of such? It feels a bit deceptive that we're not entirely sure what we're getting since it's not equal to the usual PopcornFX (I understand there's probably not much you can do about it).
Also, will this change in the future, and if so, when?

    a)
    b)
Hard. Very hard for 250$.I'll pass.

You just 'killed' the 'ambitions' of those who will buy this tool. They will have difficulty offer or sell the result of their work. This policy is very rare (see single) on the UT's Store.

250$ is good for small indie companies and bigger ones. They don't target individual indies as the price would be more around 50$.

How so? I want it so I can make effects in my game, not so I can sell cheap effects on the Asset Store. Just because it's harder to sell your effects doesn't mean nobody wants it.
Also, as far I understand, they'll still be releasing new effects, they just won't be specific to the Unity version.

Making good effect is not that easy. This tool would permit those who can sell their effects to those who had only the player (Like Shader Forge or Particle Playground). Just an opinion.

Of course, you can buy it and keep what you do with it but a free non watermarked player version and a full tool allowed to sell fxs created by the community is the best for everyone. My 2 cents.

We already have some contacts in the dev team, extending the public API is not something easy. We are also looking for a studio working with the full source version of Unity to push things forward.

There is still our public Trello (https://trello.com/b/Z1q9xz72/popcornfx-roadmap) where you can see the list of upcoming features and vote for them. If there is something special you want to do with the unity plugin, please ask (either on forums or by email) and we'll tell you if it's possible or not. It will help us dealing with the Unity dev team to improve the integration. There's already a lot that you can do!

@ZJP: sorry if it wasn't clear. Asking you to contact us - if you want to release effects you created - doesn't mean that we won't allow it in a near future. You're absolutely right, making good effects is not that easy so we want to lead the path and ensure that contributors will really take the time to get the most of PopcornFX.

I was looking at this plugin on the asset store last night and 250 is pretty reasonable for what I will be getting. The burn zombie was a perfect reason just to use this, and it is easy to set up. Hopefully down the line, i will be able to use Popcorn FX to simulate things like blood gushing... (i hope to get this working, and I am using a special shader set) again, 250 is pretty fair for something THIS good... Popcorn FX is also in Substance Painter...

Popcorn FX will be a PERFECT replacement for Shuriken... I hate it with a passion because it is not easy to control. @PopcornFX In a future update will you guys allow for liquid sim using the PBR shaders...? I want to do realistic blood and the effect is there... just having the ability to use shaders will help sell the effect.

    Thanks for the kind words.
We've been discussing the matter and the problem is that Unity won't let us fill out vertex-buffers from native to C# fastly enough, so the only way of doing this we can imagine is by providing a way of overriding our own shaders with custom, user-controlled ones at runtime.

That is definitely something we want to do in the future, we just can't provide you with a time estimate right now.

@darkhog haha thanks! it may be interesting of course to have a native integration into Unity but we also want to keep offering a middleware accessible for all studios, game engines and even other industries ;)

@gallenwolf it's not on the roadmap yet, but there is some plans to work on a new version of the editor, and this version should be multiplatform. For now, with MacOS you can try using Parrallels, we already have some users doing it and it can run smoothly enough.

Could you see if you could make version that can work with Unity Free? Plugins AFAIK aren't available in UFree, but you can make up your own plugin interface in c# since you can access DLL files directly via .NET/Mono API directly. Actually that what creators of Cubiquity, PolyVox voxel library port did so it's possible.

We are actively looking at this right now. If anyone has thoughts, would love to hear them (specifically with regards to mobile). @PopcornFX, you may be in touch with one of our VFX artists already, feel free to drop me a line if you get a chance.
