Poll: what if Unity dropped support for ancient GPUs? (2013 version)

Discussion in 'General Discussion' started by Aras, May 17, 2013.

?

Drop pre-DX9 GPU support?

  1. Drop them! My games probably don't even work on 10+ year old GPUs.

I would definitely drop support for 10 year old hardware... the problem with working with older hardware, is if you have a high quality game being built on the newest tech, then you would have to optimise the game SO MUCH to work on the legacy hardware...and I feel that an artist should not have to sacrifice quality to cater to dinosaur systems...

in my situation, I have two computers that are similar in spec, so I can create my game as the highest quality possible. Hell, the game I am making wouldn't run clean on a older GPU

Presumably the new versions of Unity will have new features that will continue to be beyond the reach of old hardware, so I'm sure if someone is trying to target old hardware for some reason, they'd use older versions of Unity that lack new features that they can't use... Drop 'em!

I'd like to say "Thanks for asking" though - I'm glad that the Unity Devs ask the community before just taking action.

Those folks are used to working with outdated equipment anyway. Let them use Unity 4.0.

Even my computer is far from new, but really? 10 year old tech? What are you doing creating games anyway?

Drop it. Keep blazing a path forward.

    What tatoforever said. ;)

No seriously: I would not mind dropping support for anything Pre-DirectX 9. That still covers so much ground that 3% would be neglectable. I know it's not an easy choice and that 3% can be a lot of customers. But if it's like Eric said - that every Pro License covers all the Pro Versions of the former releases and can be downloaded and used if necessary at no extra cost - then go for it. I actually did not know that untill now, either. It sounds like a reasonable solution.

Unity still lacks enough features that should have higher priority. At some point I think that these choices will have to be made - also in order not to bloat the software unnecessary.

Another vote for: Axe that dinosaur support.

Whup I voted for No before seeing that you meant pre DX9. Thats actually 1 less no and 1 more yes.

DX9 is a good bottom line. Where would the likes of a first gen intel mac mini sit then?

They're not able to run the two most recent releases of OS X, and a third one is probably out this year. The problem will solve itself ;)
