Blocky pong. Starting with the basics is always preferable to trying to make a project you simply won't have the knowledge and experience to complete.

Edit* BTW peeps even if this is 'one of those' questions it doesn't hurt to gently guide people. We don't even know how old the OP is.

    Start with something small.

You're going to hear that a lot. Everyone who has any experience is going to tell you that. A lot of people come here saying they're going to kick off their game dev career by making the next DayZ/WoW/MMOFPSRPG. You know how many of those people successfully finished their DayZ/WoW/MMOFPSRPG as their first project?

    Zero.

Creating a game is a very complicated process and requires a lot of work and dedication. Stranded Deep itself has been in development for two years with two devs and still has a fair way to go before completion. Even if you don't intend to match the artistic quality there is still an enormous amount of work required to produce a game of that scale.

So start small. Make pong, or space invaders. It may not be the answer you want to hear but it's the one you'll hear the most, and there is a reason for that.

Edit: Just getting my facts straight.

How good are you at C#?
How well do you know Unity?
How well do you know the underlying systems that are used to create 3D meshes?

The reason why I ask this is because Minecraft might look primitive compared to CoD but actually have a much more complicated terrain system. If you are a beginner, especially as a programmer, then a simpler projects is highly recommended so that you may avoid that you stop learning because of pure frustration.

Generally, most of us tend to recommend simple projects like pong, snake, pac-man, three-in-a-row etc.. until you at least got the basic knowledge about C# memorized before you even attempt to develop a game like Minecraft, or "voxel" based games as they are better known as among developers. Also, finishing small projects while learning will give you a lot more satisfaction and teach you the importance of finishing things :)

You can still take some time while learning to read about voxel based systems, they are really interesting and there is much more you can do then simple blocks if you understand the math and the underlying systems.

You don't really need to understand the underlying systems as there are assets to handle the voxel aspect for you. I still wouldn't recommend trying it if the developer is new though.

I don't know if he is prepared to spend money, so it is better to assume that he had the intention to write his own thing.
He might still need the knowledge anyway, many people that want voxels also intend to make a world that can be edited, explode and who knows what :) That is kind of the point with these engines, there is still a good chance that he might have to get his hands dirty in the end because everyone doesn't solve things the same way... just look at the big Minecraft thread here in the forum ;)
