It's hard to tell, because everyone out there have different preferences. The type of game may also have an effect, I'm not really into cute and cuddly FPS games.

Sell best? Definitely bloody and gory. But I personally prefer funny and crazy.

Well, those points are good, but the app store seems to show that cute puzzle games with a funny story line sell extremely well.

Example: Angry Birds Cut the Rope

Combo also does well, eg Zombieville

Which is the style you like the most?

It might sound too much oldskool but people once also developed the kind of games they just liked on their own.

Who is your target market? Selling a gory game on Steam is going to have different results than selling it on the App Store.

Bloody and gory games do not sell better, but is a common assumption by hardcore gamers. I've seen smaller studies, and lots of anecdotal evidence (which can be taken with a grain of salt) that demonstrate that 'core' gamers really don't care what kind of theme the game uses, but more casual players are often turned away by the 'grittier' stuff. Press and 'hardcore buzz' from games like Grand Theft Auto are very impressive, but they still don't outsell Nintendogs, Mario Kart, and other games which get far less buzz (and if comparing actual profit, these cutesy games likely look MUCH better).

Regardless, there's tons of money to be made in every direction, just have to get people to notice it.

RAGE is doing pretty well too though. But I'm more of cute and funny games myself.

    My thoughts would be -
Cute/Cuddly - sells to majority of female, kids and minority of male gamers. (Mario, Farmville, Puzzle games)
    Funny/Crazy - sells to a minority.
Blood/Gore - sells to majority of male gamers and minority of female gamers. (FPS, RPG)
Hardcore Blood/Gore - sells to all psychotics. (Manhunt)

I think Cute is a bigger market but maybe not as much money to be made, imho.

True probably the hardcore blood gore game does have a smaller userbase.

Just look at appannie and you can see that even though angry birds at $.99 is grossing more than infinity blade is at 5.99 (which I suppose you could say angry birds is selling at least 6x more then infinity blade). That means if you are price your game at .99 it would seem to make sense to hit the biggest market out there IE cute/cuddly (because it would have a larger appeal to a cross section of people).

I chose the bottom, but I meant, funny crazy-bloody gory.

Cute and cuddly may fit into that, but not necessarily.
