Wayland protocol has been around few years now,
many software built around X server has changed their default to support Wayland compositors.

I know Unity's *official* supported distro, Ubuntu, Centos 7 so to speak.
As Gnome(Ubuntu) now uses wayland, I think it's a good time to support Wayland protocol.

It would be great to see the editor move forward this way. Behaviour via Xwayland is currently quirky, but it does seem to work.

Unity Support says that they even start thinking about this issue first after Ubuntu LTS 22.04 is released
So we can expect Wayland Support somewhere 2023-2024

Dear Unity Team, this is not how this works...
If Unity LTS 22.04 released, there should be already a Wayland compatible version OUT OF BETA!

I can´t even start the hub on the LTS 22.04 (wayland disabled)...
It seem nobody from Unity is reading the forum :(

We will support Ubuntu 22.04 in the future, so expect that Wayland support is coming. I've been selfhosting it myself pretty successfully.

The main issue with Ubuntu 22.04 being faced right now has to do with Canonical dropping libssl 1.1 and solely using libssl3, which some of our dependencies like .NET 5 don't support. We're looking at mitigations for this issue, but so far Wayland hasn't been the show-stopper.

We will always be up front about our supported distros and configurations, though with limited resources we have to choose what configurations we can 1) test on and 2) support. We don't want to say we support a Linux config without having done due diligence on testing, and this only after we've updated our dependencies.

    Hello.
I understand perfectly your constraints, and I agree with you.
I think the most important here is to keep the community up to date, so we know what to expect and we don't feel "abandoned".
    Thank you for your reply.

Very nice to hear that this is on the radar. I have to give that the editor seems to run fine on a Gnome desktop under Wayland, on a non-Nvidia gpu.

However Nvidia continues to be a hinderance.
Does anyone else get the really crippling redaw lag using an Nvidia card? Where panels only update on mouse over?

And also also, Unity should support something other than Ubuntu. The growing divide between new hardware and the ever old Ubuntu kernel is problematic.

I was on Ubuntu until my machine died, however the new one (2020 model) may not be supported for a year or more still.

Using Fedora was just as easy, except that my machine isn't burning a hole in the table lacking proper power management. Not to mention the keyboard works...

Not that Fedora is the answer, but there are a few distros that are easy to use, adhere to the Freedesktop environment, and support the Gnome desktop. That seems like the smarter bet to me.

Editor is very slow to redraw on my side, even on a high end device (RTX 3080). When I change the window size, Unity is lagging as hell.

Yeah, I think it is still an open question of where the fault lies. Is it Nvidia, xWayland, or Unity? Who can say.

I was migrating to Fedora for game development, but xWayland is barely functional on my side. Takes an insane amount of time to redraw, and it is full of tiny bugs (like tooltips). Wayland support is the only way I can successfully migrate to Linux for Unity Development.

I should have been clearer, but it's very slow even on 20.04 (without Wayland).
Also, I guess Unity can say :p
