Plane detection - Farthest distance to plane for sports spectators

Hi,

I would like to detect the plane of a sports court/pitch from the stands, for sports like Soccer (worst case with big stadiums), Basketball, etc.

Would it be possible? Do you have any idea of the farthest distance that is ok for plane detection? I haven't had the opportunity to go to a stadium to try a simple plane detector, I estimate a distance ~50m, but the pitch is big, unfortunately not even close to have a rich information for the point cloud.

From my experience - not possible on regular mobile devices. Planes are detected at a distance of a few meters maximum. I guess VIO systems on mobiles are not that sensitive.

 

Thanks. That's my experience so far. And, of course, that makes totally sense considering how VIO works and also the limitations of a real-time solution. Thanks again.
