Strange, I can go hours without any lags. Maybe some plugin does trigger that?

I don't have any plugins installed, only fresh and clean Unity and lags occur

Does anyone notices different behaviour when Mac is powered and when it's in energy save mode from battery?

I've looked at the latest changelog for 2022, but I cannot find any mention on this severe performance bug? Given the previously mentioned bug ticket mentions that "the code was changed in 2022/trunk", does anyone know if this is not occurring in 2022.2? Or is is simply not mentioned in the known issues? @peter_hall any info on this would be greatly appreciated, as Unity is not usable at this point in time on the new macOS update..

Yeah, it's not in the known issues, which is a shame considering the severity of the problem. It is still in 2022.2.0

    I'm using an Intel Mac
    Ventura 13.0.1
    Unity 2021.3.14f1

I actually don't have the problem of lag, but Unity is using a lot of CPU
my actual problem is I wanted to keep looking at the Editor.log by using tail -f
but this message is constantly being written to Editor.log all the time:

*** make sure you understand the risks before trying this ***

I tried starting Unity as root, and didn't get any of the Memory consumption went from Unknown to Unknown messages any more.

Crazy idea, but may work for special conditions.

    Worth a try for me.
Do you launch Unity Hub itself as root and then every Unity launched through it has proper performance? Or you have to do the specific terminal “sudo open application” for on a specific Unity version folder?

I don't think it is wise to run under root superuser and risk third party access to your computer.

Moreover, macOs changed access rules to my project, so I couldn't just use it without root later. Need to grand access to my user again.

Saw some people on MacRumors ranging from "it's all fine" to "even the system Settings app window hangs when clicking iCloud"... myself I have skipped it.

I retract a previous comment of mine then. Maybe not worth a try then (in my situation that is).

For me Ventura itself has been working fine, but this Unity issue still persists even in the latest versions.

i had to downgrade macOS to be able to work again.

from my experience, every node-based ui triggered the massive lag, either shader graph or visual scripting. whats funny, in playmode i could patch without lag. but in edit mode, the editor is not usable on ventura.

btw. i tried all available versions and pipelines. my machine is a macbook pro m1 max.

It seems, we'll have to wait the fix for 21.3 or 22.2 a little(!?) longer.

Right now I can't work on our multiplayer project on my mac (even one instance of Unity is hard to use, imagine using 4 instances at the same time). I have to use the desktop at the office until Unity fixes this for its LTS version. So annoying.

I also have this issue since I upgraded to Ventura.
The Editor is soooo laggy and each time I run my game even with a simple scene or empty scene, my MBP is about to take off literally. Please, fix this ASAP it's really painful !

I see that fix version is available in the hub for 2023.1.0a23 ALPHA if I'm reading everything right. Hopefully that could mean something for LTS.

After some testing on Unity 2023.1.0a23 I can confirm that editor is now running smooth! So, now we need to wait for this fix on stable releases of the Engine

There's a new installer available for 2021.3.16f1, release notes here:
    https://unity.com/releases/editor/whats-new/2021.3.16#release-notes

It mentions it, downloading and installing! :rocket emoji here:
    Screenshot 2022-12-15 at 4.08.47 PM.png

    Update:
Downloaded, installed, upgraded project and... looks good to me! I only gave it a 15mins test drive but confident that the lagginess would have been present with the actions I did: play/stop several times, enter/exit prefabs, import new assets, etc etc

Performance is now better on 2021.3.16f1 but still I have problems with panning. Can someone confirm performance drops when Alt + Mouse panning when you have object selected?

Sorry it's taken me a while to get back to you all on this - totally my fault, I should have done a better job keeping you informed about the progress we've been making.

I believe that we now have a fix for all the currently supported Editor versions, and the fix should be in the next releases for those Editor builds (if it's not already out - I think 2021.3 is the only released version with a fix so far though).

AW_GAMES - I've tried to recreate that slowdown with panning and can't see it on my MacBook. Is there anything about the project or asset? (I tried in the URP Sample Scene in case you're able to try that...)

I did some testing on 2021.3.16f1, and here are results:
URP Sample Scene - everything smooth, there is no any slow-downs using panning
HDRP Sample Scene - the whole editor is slow with lights and effects toggles checked. Also there is Pan + Mouse performance drop problem
Standard Built-In - There is Pan + Mouse performance drop problem.

Can You check this issue again on standard 3D Core scene with Default Built-in renderer? Just put on scene random object like Cube, focus it using "F" key and start panning around using Alt + Left Mouse Button. After some seconds everything should start lagging :(

    My setup:
Mac Studio M1 Max, macOS Ventura 13.1

I've just tested again. I started a new project using the 3D Core scene with Built-in renderer, then:
    • created a cube
    • selected the cube in scene view
    • hit F to focus
    • used the mouse to pan and rotate around the cube
and still no slowdown/lag. Are you able to share a Unity Profiler capture of the Editor so I can see if there's anything obvious I can try to re-create the issue?

I tried updating to 2021.3.16f1, it works great now. But since my team's project is currently in 2021.3.11f1 (everyone else is working on that version so updating the project is not an option yet). So I intent to only update Unity locally to work on the prefabs (and only push those prefab changes up). But every time I open up a prefab, there's instantly some changes being made to the prefab (picture below). I guess the new editor is using some higher version of asset serialization? Is there anyway to keep the fix in 2021.3.16f1 while not also upgrading the serialization thing (or whatever causing those changes)? Thanks

I just upgraded to 2021.3.16 and still see the black flickering when v-sync is turned on in the editor. Still work to do on the Ventura version.

Are you on external monitor, and is variable refresh rate active? I am usually having this kind of problems when I activate the VRR (even on Windows).

In the 2021 version, the editor no longer slows down as stated in this thread (which is amazing!), but playback performance in the editor is terrible. Honestly, it's been terrible through not just Ventura but also all of Monterey. During Big Sur, it was fine, but even just a 2d game will have random and then continuous lag spikes, and don't even dare turn on VSync in the editor. On my Windows machine, it's flawless, but I've essentially given up on being satisfied with development on my Mac at this point.

It is probably because the throttling. It is Apple's fault. My i9 16" 2019 mbp throttles and then decreases down to 1 GHz in play mode. I don't know if the Apple Silicon macs have a similar problem; but for intel macbooks, the problem caused by Apple. They just denying this problem and responses as "this is normal behaviour".

Is it possible to download 2022.2.2f1 somehow already? Maybe through Beta (but now it is not there). I'm tired to relaunch Unity every 15 minutes...

Had to downgrade to Monterey due to this huge fiasco of Ventura, Unity was not the only one hit.
Working on good old Monterey for more than a month without any further major issues again.

I only got this problem when I installed the "Visual Scripting" package out of curiosity. Since then (and even after removing the package) I need to restart Unity every 10 minutes, as well.
What's strange, however, is that I was successfully using Unity on M1 Mac OS Ventura for months without issues..
