Only playing default animation in animation tab and not animator controller

I downloaded this character from the asset store

and I tried to script the available animations in an animator controller, but when I play the scene, only the default animation in the animation tab plays. I tried unchecking animation and only checking animator, but it still didn't work. Any advice would be helpful.
