    Okay!......robot booting up!

Let's begin by shamelessly cloning Angry Birds! May be doing a little tweak in the design, but overall a blatant copy!

... zap zap. robot under fire!

Don't blame me! I know my little kid would love to play and make his own challenges!

Now, that inital hatred is over. Tell me what mechanics would you add if you were to make Angry birds? What idea appeared to you while playing angry birds?

I'm designing the mechanics now. Right now it's a crow after breaking eggs (ya pigs). Pardon the weird quick sketch. I've not drawn a single thing for a while. Rusty hands.

Be sure to check my blog. more details coming up there.

    YES !
Even before seeing anything more, much much much respect for you tackling this ! Enough of that whining and talking in the gossip forum about why nobody finished a game, ever.
You're my hero of the day. For now :D
Hope you'll link/quote/update this thread as well and no rely on people checking out your blog regularly. The works in progress forums could need a thread like yours !
Wooohoo, knowing your previous project, I'm psyched :D

Here is my list of reasons why, IMO, Angry Birds is so popular:

    1. A simple, yet engaging interface. Something that is graphically pleasing, yet easy to navigate.

    2. The leisure pace at which the birds fly. The user has plenty of time to react and touch the screen to release the OnClick() actions.

    3. The long period of time that it takes for the pigs to "die". Often, I will sit there for seconds at a time watching intently as the pigs teeter back and forth, etc.

    4. Don't show the whole level at a time, set the camera width to, for example, half of the total length.

    5. Keep the angle set on the birds launcher from the previous launch, but reset it with a new level.

    6. At the beginning of the level, have the camera start at the right side of the screen, and swiftly work it's way to the left to where the launcher is.

    7. The idle animations of the birds. They jump, chat, and wiggle back and forth as they await to be launched.

    8. The sound of the game. The various sfx used fit the game perfectly.

    9. The overall style of the game. It has a specific look and feel to it, and it stays consistent.

    10. The realistic trajectory that the bird's flight takes.

Thanks, it's too early to predict what's coming ahead of me. Can I really do it. While keeping up with client deadline and a family. This is really a personal challenge that I wish to share with you guys.

Wonderful analysis of the game design. This can really help me at this moment. Thanks a ton.

But like it that someone is challenging the idea to remake a game like angry birds but bring more to it.

Pretty bad take on this. I'd say the artwork is the main reason.

    Certainly!

    Check the first build everybody!

    HERE

Not much. Still figuring a way out for the catapult. Anyway, it's playable. At least, technically.

A physics professor has actually written several articles for Wired about how unrealistic the trajectories are in Angry Birds. :)

Good job physics professors don't make games then. I would have assumed that he and everyone else would have realised by now that game physics are hardly going to be realistic, but instead are going to be fun.

These are really 3D objects. With their movements constrained to 2 axis only. 3d sprites and an orthographic camera. These all did the trick.

Thanks a lot, will try that.

Actually I think scripts like these can be really helpful. Because they export straight out of photoshop layers! Though not into atlases but pngs.

    Nice found!

By the way, posted another webplayer update. With multiple tryouts. Pardon the boxxy graphics. Just sprite placeholders.

Started with the graphics. Really doing the concepts and the final sprites at the same time. :)

Do check the build now. Lots of things going on with the graphics. It's fun! Like modding Angry Birds.

Looks good so far, love it... one thing, I think that the bird goes a little too fast though. And if you lose, the wooden planks don't reset, they stay where you knocked them down last time, and the bird is still pulled back.

Yep, it's a little bit too fast, i'd say slow it down by 15% and see how it works, other than that it's great :)

Well, right now the reset only takes place when you've broken the egg. You can pitch unlimited crows until you break it. There's no losing. But I'm going to add that element.

Also check the speed now. Added some graphics and animation to the crow. He flies with his eyes closed! :)

Small update on the textures and GUI layout. And small mouse actions too. Also, breakable glass blocks etc.

This particular image is giving me some ideas about tweaking the gameplay. What if it's not about breaking the egg. It's about eating it.

    Some major changes.

ums.... Major like.. I've changed the title of the game itself. Also the primary(only) character design.

Hunger overcomes Anger and Angry crows have become Hungry Crows. lol. :)

The game mechanics is almost set. It's a slight deviation from Angry Birds. Simply the crows are hungry and want to eat the egg. But they must not completely crash it. They must gently break it's top to feast on it.

Let me know if it these changes are welcome.

    PLAY

To be honest, the old crow design was a lot better, this one looks a bit lame : p
Rest of the game looks very nice though : )

Too bad! I thought the new design has better contrast. Guess you can't please everybody when it comes down to aesthetic choices.
