On macOS, why are there extra "Unity (Not Responding)" in Activity Monitor?

I frequently have 3-6 editors open (currently 2020.3.8), and when VS debugging I need to select which editor to link to, and often the list of "open" Unity processes is larger than the number of editors I have open. So, I pop open Activity Monitor to see what's going on, and I see the expected number of running "Unity" processes, but also several "Unity (Not Responding)" processes. I don't see any ill affects if I force quit any of these "not responding' processes.

Any ideas where they are coming from?

Kill 'em. They happen from time to time. If you don't kill 'em they'll chew your battery dead.

My question isn't what to do with them, but WHY are they there at all.
