What's up with on demand Importing?

By this I mean the update to the core of the asset database where all assets does not have to be imported completely before the editor is interactive, but assets gets gets loaded asynchronously as they're needed.

It's more important than anything else you're currently doing at Unity (no hyperbole), and last I heard it was like 1 person on it? There's been some gifs of it happening, but I don't know if that was mockups or a thing that worked until hit by a light breeze or almost done (tm)

On demand/async imports of assets is the single most important thing Unity could be working on! No hyperbole.

    Hi Baste!
We are also really interested in the potential of on demand importing! - and we already have a command line argument where you can enable a version of it (it has been there for a while, but its not something we talk that much about). I would not recommend enabling the flag on your next project because you will most likely run into issues. But you can play around with it, if you are interested (and I guess you are :)). If a more fully fledged version of on demand importing should be a reality in the future, we would make sure to make a proper announcement.

The command line argument is just
    -ondemand
    - I just tried it and got some scary warnings just by opening the 3D template project - so enter on your own risk :).

I'd love to see this feature expanded on as well. I just tried redownloading a larger project from source control and the initial import times were murderous! 2021.3 imports were faster, but 2020 throttled completely on the import stage with 3+ hour times.

Really interested as well: in the context of animation films production, this is a must.
