It looks really good. I can tell that it's already going to be a cult classic at least, if not something much bigger.

The moving cursor during the trailer was kind of interesting. Do you think that they intended to leave it in?

OK but how did they do the water effects, especially the ocean with the boat?

Are they using a toon style shader, or just good diffuse textures?

I was just going to say (and then made it to the comment) that it looks like Suimono. I own Suimono and it's very nice!

Thanks @chingwa :) Maybe someday I'll get a game made to use it in.

Many developers won't migrate to a new major release mid-project unless there is a very good reason to do so. There are even some who refuse to use a new version until it has had at least one patch release.

They already appear to be getting very good results with Unity Pro 4.6.

Which can only mean they'll get even better results in unity 5.1 at some point in the future :D

I assume all of this is the case. The project looks quite far in development and it would be safer to not upgrade and to stay on their current version of Unity. Unless they need any of the new features 5.0 could bring them. ;)

As long as they don't get nabbed by Unreal!

"The game is currently being built on Unity 4.6. No fancy technology is used and we haven’t found any desperate need for one yet."

This pretty much answer it, beautiful art is beautiful anyway and doesn't need hyper advanced rendering techniques.
And the old saying "if it ain't broken, don't fix it".

If they were not willing to switch to Unity 5.0, they are not going to switch to Unreal. It is not a matter of Unity 5.0 lacking stability or features, but rather they don't want to slow down development if the upgrade brings no actual benefits.

They are using a bunch of fx and post fx from the asset store, most likely everything doesn't fully work yet. Also, hey are aiming for a fall 2016 release, so, if they do need to switch, they have time. ;)

Switching mid project sets you back a bit, as already mentioned. There are a bunch of little thing that new adjusting in the code. Plus all the small tweaks made to the art to match the way 4.6 renders.

There is also the consideration of cost. Buying new pro licenses is a non trivial expense.

 That game looks beautiful. I thought I was watching an animated movie then I realized that was the game. Good job for them, seems like they are getting lots of press and will reach their goal in no time.

I don't get the OMG portion of this. Yeah, the art style looks good, but other than that its just a dude running around with a sword/gun.

You never know... maybe they can't spare the $$$ to upgrade and or refuse to brand their product "personal edition".

That is the OMG part. Unity games have a reputation for looking like blurry stock assets being poorly cobbled together. I blame greenlight quality control & the asset store for being too accessible for newcomers with money to burn. Did you know that UnitZ was put on greenlight for a 3rd time? It's being called "uncrowded" this time around.

Honestly, it just looks good period. Regardless of engine.

I would love to see a post mortem on thier animation pipeline. That is a crazy amount of animation. I'm curious how much, if any, is automated/scripted and where.

Why would they get nabbed by Unreal? They would have to rebuild the entire game if they were to switch engine. It would be much less painful and quicker to upgrade to 5.0.

Plus from what I see, it's not really a technically demanding game, but a nicely art-directed game. People seem to think the impact is somehow some kind of engine magic. It's really just a talented eye and a well crafted touch. There is no benefit shifting engines. Might be more work not less.

They might be buddies with the "lost ark" dev team. We've all done stupid things with the right push from a group of friends.

Yes, because it depends on the artist and how well their shaders / textures / etc are made. But Unity still gets that rep because of the flood on greenlight :p

Even the terrible unreal games that are starting to pop up (see: accidental runner) look really shiny simply because of the quality of the unreal free & stock assets. The reputation comes from people seeing all of these "made with [unreal | unity] engine" and then a horrible mess of what they could get their hands on for free commercially.

Of course our community knows better, but the greenlight community actually thinks uncrowded looks like a fun and original game, while in reality it's the 3rd direct upload of the UnitZ asset. :(

The only engine magic I'm aware of us unreal's networking. Tell the engine that an object is network aware... done. I hope UNET is a little easier, when it exists.

That reminds me of my last job. The Dead Linger. Ogre3D -> Unity3D -> Unreal Engine 4. They seem happy now. Probably for the networking reason. A lot of the bugs were from the networking side and small performance issues with procedural generation. They ditched procedural generation and now have the easiest to use networking solution available.

How did they do that camera focus?

Certain object gets blurred if they aren't on the focus of the camera o.o

It's the talent of the hard working developers that decide ultimately if something looks next gen good or not, or if something is fast or not. Or plays well. It's incredibly easy (arguably the easiest) thing to make a game look rubbish and run slow.

Well, sure if you want to take the obvious and logical view. ;)

The simple reality is that very few people understand the amount of work and knowledge that is required to make games, and certain aspects of game development. And, of course by "people" I mean everyone. Myself included. In my experience, folks who are really, really good at what they do, often are very bad at estimating how long something they do will take, (confusing ease with time-consuming), and by that same mechanism will assume that others who are really skilled can do everything in their wheelhouse "quickly" because they are good at it. If that makes sense.

No magic buttons, just skills and a lot of hard work. ;) We'd all love the "make everything look awesome, regardless of my actual visual skills" shader. ;)

Yeah there's no real difficulty at all, just how much patience you have and understanding that sometimes it does take a bit of time to build a house.

I think accidental runner shows that you can make anything look nice, regardless of any skills you may or may not have. I wonder if 1 of my terrible 3D models would look nicer there lol

I think the guy did not make any of the models or gfx as most if not all seemed to be from official Unreal tutorial/learning materials by Epic(?)...
