What is the official name of the new 4.6 UI? There were lots of crazy joke names in beta, though the most prominent ones were something like: "uGUI", "new UI", "4.6 UI" and even simply "UI". Since it's been out for a few months, I think I missed the final memo.

I was wondering this exact question this morning! I saw uGUI in a plugin and thought it looked pretty correct, but never recalled seeing it in any Unity documentation.

If it has an official name other than "UI", or possibly "Unity UI", Unity aren't using it.

The manual refers to it as "UI"
The tutorials refer to it as "UI"
The forums refer to it as "Unity UI"

I would have liked a nice shiny name for it though.

It would have been great if they had choosen a more unique name, it's hard to find stuff related to it on the web using the term Unity UI.. not too hard but still, Unity UI can be a lot of things and many people refer to the Immediate Mode GUI as Unity UI.

I don't know about everyone else, but I always refer to it as Marvin the Barbarian Waffle. You probably should as well.

Like it was said in the last 3 threads about this there isn't any special name for it.

It's just "UI" or "Unity UI".

UGUI was used during beta, but they scrapped it. "GUI" is legacy/editor.

Its confusing at the moment, but it should clear up over time.

That can't be right. It's "Melvin", surely? That's what I've been using. Don't tell me I've been wrong the whole time!

All you need to know about UI resources is that my tutorials are the most awesome ones. Just follow the link in my signature, or google me by name!

(In case it wasn't obvious this post is not meant to be taken seriously :))

I've seen at least one other using that terminology, that "UI" and "GUI" refer to the different systems, and I'll be honest and say I hope it dies real fast. Both systems are user interfaces and both are graphical. It's utterly arbitrary and ambiguous.

One system is immediate mode and function-based, the other is GameObject and component-based, so I'd personally use terminology that reflects that. Regardless of whether "official" labels exist or what they are, if I tell you I did a project with the "immediate mode GUI" or the "component-based GUI" you can easily figure out which one I mean. Descriptive names are useful.

That takes too long to type. How about IMGUI and CBGUI :).

The general impression I get is GUI is legacy/editor, while UI is the more official new ui moving forward for common uses.

I understand they're both still functional, but I doubt they'll be adopted that way.

UUI - pronounced "ooooey". Like GUI, but with an extra "oo" :p
