Using a the Unity standard FPS controller I get object stutter when strafing around the object.

I've setup a simple project with a cube and you can see the problem here:

I've been using Unity for a few months. I've tried everything and searched everywhere to fix this problem. Can anyone help?

So I've just updated the fixed timestep from 0.01 to 0.001 to match the FixedUpdate calls to the Update calls (~1000fps) and it fixed the issue.

I then tried a vsync to 60fps and set the fixed timestep to 0.017 and it fixed it as well (mostly).

If I set the fixed timestep to call fixed update at a significantly higher or lower rate than the update then I get severe motion stuttering.

Can anyone provide any tips on why this might be and how to work with this or around this issue?
Setting a static fixed timestep is not going to work in real life as framerate will vary in game and across various devices/PCs.
