I agree. This is basically how I see it. I am not shocked by the game. I always figured this (and perhaps even more) is the destination 3D games have been heading for quite some time. Despite people giving reasons for why killing in other games is different the point is simple... a lot of gamers simply enjoy killing. Period. In GTA series many players get more enjoyment from messing with the cops and innocent civilians than they do from anything else. And 3D is always pushing graphics for more and more realism. Supposedly this is what gamers want. So these devs gave it to them. Killing for simple enjoyment presented as realistically as possible. I consider this to basically represent the core of all 3D FPS games. They've just removed the bogus weak stories and other stuff to let you kill, kill, kill in glorious 3D which is obviously what players of 3D FPS have been doing and want to do.

This is not only apathy but hypocrisy. Why should the people playing an extremely video game be singled out as some type of category level 5 phenomenon?

What about the "psychology" of people who watch a person being attacked on a train and do nothing about it and even laugh or watch, even more so if the victim is of another race or creed? Or the "psychology" of a person who supports endless wars and killing of ordinary people in foreign lands, normal people with have aspirations just like everybody else in the world? Or the "psychology" of people who actively support those who shoot and kill teenagers simply for wearing sweatshirt "hoodies"?

I agree, this is nothing new really.. but neither is my opinion. I feel much the same way about all of those titles. As for people being oversensitive these days, I think that's plain bullsh!t to be honest.. people have become too de-sensitised..

I wasn't saying "certain things" shouldn't exist. There's plenty of things wrong with the world. In the interest of keeping things on topic I was talking in the context of video games.
    I agree with you :)

I like the voice actor they have, its cartoonish reminded me of duke nukem. I also like his stance against political correctness and SWJ, definite buy for me. I dont see how its any different then crimsonland, or gta where you can kill people if you want, no one complained about the tv show dexter where they made a serial killer a hero so it seems like a double standard.

Love the trailer. I am buying the game as soon as I can get my 'sociopathic' hands on it.

Why not call a duck a duck?

Society has always been hypocrites. Not talking about the issues, lying about them, yet doing far more horrible acts behind closed doors. Anyone who has the slightest clue on how the world really works wouldn't bat an eye at this genre.

However, kudos to a dev team for pushing the envelope. We need more games like this to open communication about topics that are taboo. Not only will it provide an opportunity for conversation, it can open up creative outlets for writers who wish to play a sociopath and write about it without having to gain real world experience.

If you want morbid, look no further than the Sims. Lock one of your Sims in a room and starve them until they die. Watch how the defecate themselves, looking right at you, screaming, crying, begging until they simply die.

    It is all about perspective.

I would love to see the reaction of people if they just skinned this with Nazis or zombies. Keep the exact same level of violence, just change the context.

More mindless fodder for the anti-games lobby. Super.

There is an interesting question in this though, as Epic requested removal of their logo.

What would Unity's position be if this was made with Unity Free (where the logo is mandatory)?

I don't mean to stir a pot or force a stance, I'm genuinely curious as this is a pretty polarising subject (not that it should be, but people are strange).

Perhaps UT will have no choice but to upgrade the offender's license to Pro for free? (So that they can then ask them to remove it??) :D

I'd have to agree with most of that; it *is* all about perspective and opening up taboos that shine a light on society. Graphics and realism have improved, but the basic genre goes back a long way, with numerous titles.

Having said that, it's not a game I'd want to play - but I wouldn't stop those that want to from doing so.

Less than 100 years ago or so, people used to go and watch hangings as a form of entertainment. There would be vendors hawking food, people would pack picnics, and put little children on shoulders to get a better look at the dead man's last dance. Before that, people would line up around the block to go watch people fight to the death in the most gruesome ways. People STILL pay big bucks to watch two men beat each other to a bloody pulp. Fake violence on fake people is a lot better IMHO.

Good. It'll really destroy the case of "video game violence encourage real world violence". Having people play this will put a nail in the coffin of the myth of real world events being influenced by video games rather than video games reflecting issues in the real world.

Will this game cause 14 year olds to go out and mass murder civilians? Probably not. But the claim of that potential will be made and all of us in the industry will face palm so hard people will think we have ebola from the blood pouring down our faces :D

There. I dismissed the graphic nature of the trailer and made an ebola joke. Internet generation, woo!

    --edit

upon a second watch, I think this game would be better from a first person perspective.

When I had a bad day at work, I used to popin Hitman: Blood Money, play the ship level, then kill everyone I could find stealthy. I tried to kill everyone without anyone knowing it was my character, then complete the objective with no witnesses. It made me feel good to achieve a self-made goal to a mission that was already difficult. I'm a virtual sociopath. :D
Would I play this game? No, there is no challenge in killing random, unarmed people. I don't find it appeasing. I also, don't like the isometric camera.
Should this game be made? Sure. Media does not control [sane] peoples' behavior, nor should it be blamed for it. It is the person's own psychosis, and/or lack of supervision, if the offender is a minor.

While this is not my kind of game at all, I think the game has every right to exist, without question.

Banning a game based on it's content being objectionable is akin to banning books. You may find the content questionable, and it may very well be questionable to everyone, but if people truly want games to be seen as art, then you can't simply ban things you don't like or don't understand.

Just like I can't ban Modern Art because I think it looks ridiculous/makes no sense. I wouldn't ban this game either.

That doesn't mean I need to go buy it, or support it, or say it's great. That's a personal choice to make

We can't it both ways people. Art encompasses the breadth of humanity, this means it includes subjects we may find questionable, like this one.

Go to the article in the first post, the video is the first one there.

I actually found the "censored" one from I am da bawss funny (watch original first).
Protection from hippo: do only open if you have no problem with violence, replace XXX with www:
    Parody: XXX.youtube.com/watch?v=2Z6hNXsldMU

Was hard to find. Already many reactions and parodies on youtube. Their strategy works like a charm.
Epic will get some nice money from their 5%. If they are nice they donate it to some victim support organization.

    Another perspective. http://www.cad-comic.com/cad/20141020

Boring article, boring game. Moody white supremacist goes on killing rampage to deal with perverted sense of angst and bitterness. Goat simulator has better gameplay and better storyline.

Are we still having this debate? I thought this was settled. The content of video games have no statistical impact on the likelihood of a person to commit crimes in the real world, unless some pretty groundbreaking studies have come out in the last couple of years that I've missed. There is, if anything, a negative correlation between the popularity of violent video games and the crime rate. The rate of violent crime in America peaked in 1993 - immediately after Doom and Mortal Kombat become super popular, violent crime plummetted. I know correlation does not imply causation, but... that's pretty dramatic.

To more directly address your point, no, I don't believe there will be more school shootings nor more cops getting killed. I think it's most likely that there would be no change at all, and if there is any change caused by this game, it's more likely to be downward than upward.

This game is so mentally ill, I really feel sorry for the folks who had to sit and develop it for months/years on end. I hope that it flops.. or rather, that the buying public isn't similarly mentally ill enough to support it.

The game is shallow, but it's not that bad in my point of view.

    It's aimed at mature audience
    Thanks...

Actually, this is a NICE game. lol

I've played some games more brutal and gore than this.
Mostly developed by the Japanese company.
Rape, killing, rip out heart, eat your boyfriend/girlfriend. You got them all.

And I'm not mentally sick person to begin with.

To proof that, let me show you one of the loving character in the game I'm developing.

p/s: This thread tension is too high, I hope some joke calm us down a bit? lol
p/ss: The character above is actual character in the game I've develop.

That was a good read. Too bad it's impossible to obtain now. Not that I would want it, but no doubt every game has a market! Maybe it would have been a way for some stressed individual to control those urges instead of taking it out on an innocent stranger or friend.

Would that game have been banned if you were a woman raping a man? Probably, but the reasoning would be similar, maybe something like men are objectifying women just by making such a game.

If the fairer sex cannot withstand the barrage of sound waves carrying the word "bossy", how could anyone expect them to cope with the existence of RapeLay? We must protect the fragile!

If we don't fight for freedom of expression now, we're all F***ed when they can monitor our thoughts and dreams.

Most folks are unaware that police departments in the US are for profit corporations listed on Dun & Bradstreet. When they were of community service and enforcing common law they were called policemen. Now they enforce UCC legal statutes in corporate courts and the common law courts have been vacated... and are called police officers..as in officers of a corporation...and not common law. I may suggest that this is one of the causes of the symptoms of a sick society here in the US. The clowns who made this "game" need a good swift kick with a size 12 cowboy boot to the arse.

That's a different kind of violent though. Rape inflicts a different kind of suffering. Anyone who's ever seen an 80s movie probably won't be phased by this game at all. The only amusement from it is watching people react to it.

I despise being stuck on this planet with people who would endorse this as freedom of expression and are into the quick buck, regardless of the content they consume or produce. Of course there is a market for this. Approximately 5% of the population are not truly human and have no empathy. They are psychopaths and will go through you with an axe to get what they want in the refrigerator. The question remains as to whether you wish this non-human in a human's mask to be fed and encouraged.

When a respected technology giant like epic removes the logo, it's probably for a very good reason. Lines were crossed and I don't see any justification for what is essentially just torture porn. It's not a happy day for gaming.

    @ippdev

I think you mean to say sub-human. Crazy persons like myself aren't interested in murder or rape because we're so far out of our minds that things that are physically possible just don't thrill us. I need to be immersed in VR where I can shoot lasers from my nose and breathe underwater indefinitely and not worry about getting the bends. Or go out into space and not worry about expanding to my environment and suffering one of the most horrible deaths possible.

I don't think there's much of a market for isometric murder porn. If this was really trying to satisfy people with a bloodlust, then it would be in first person ;)

I'd personally wait on "stabbing simulator 2014" where you hook up a 3D mouse or other VR motion controller and actually stab people to death. You can tell from the monologue of the first like... 10 seconds of this video that it's trying too hard to be edgy and failing miserably.

"Durr dem worm humons gut no rite to liiv no muhr. Gon' take mah open carry an' kik suom anus!"

No pal. I said exactly what I meant.
    http://ponerology.com/evil_2b.html

"The ultimate cause of evil lies in the interaction of two human factors: 1) normal human ignorance and weakness and 2) the existence and action of a statistically small (4-8% of the general population) but extremely active group of psychologically deviant individuals. The ignorance of the existence of such psychological differences is the first criterion of ponerogenesis. That is, such ignorance creates an opening whereby such individuals can act undetected.

The presence of such “disease” on the individual level is described in the Almost Human section of this website. However, depending on the type of activity of psychopathic and characteropathic individuals, evil can manifest on any societal level. The greater the scope of the psychopath’s influence, the greater harm done. Thus any group of humans can be infected or “ponerized” by their influence. From families, clubs, churches, businesses, and corporations, to entire nations. The most extreme form of such macrosocial evil is called “pathocracy”."

That's not what i meant really. What I meant is that it is in the human behaviour to enjoy these kind of things and some will always go deeper exploring that "evil" part of themselves than others. Of course there shouldn't be any limits on artistic expression, even if you don't always like what you see.

While the rest was ok by me, this quote make me sick. They ARE human beings, just like you and me, they are just... different in a bad way. I dislike how so-called "normal" people try and dehumanize others because they did bad things.
Yes, they are evil and yes, they should be put in prison/psych ward, but they are still human.
That kind of thinking makes it too easy to brush aside the incarcerated when everyone is one mistake, or one bad day away from being there themselves.

Sounds a little dramatic to call aspects of human nature "non-human". Or maybe there are definitions of human used for those contexts I'm not familiar with. Can a human do something that makes them not human? That's like saying buildings aren't natural because they were created by people... who come from nature. Yet some people who believe that will say that structures resembling houses that come from other things, like certain beaver dams, are natural. Is the line drawn there because we're more intelligent? If our intelligent is a product of nature, why are it's products not all considered natural?

Somewhere I went off topic. Thanks for the read! That 'evil' stuff might be useful in giving me new definitions for evil ^-^

That was kinda my issue as well, which I sort of made out in my mini-rant. They might be outliers in what we consider normal, but they're still a product of nature. Maybe points like that try to avoid directly saying what they mean because the claims will become unscientific and then discarded?

I would promulgate on this in detail but previous attempts at inserting topics into threads deviating from the main topic were expunged from the record. I would suggest a good reading of that website or to get the book Political Ponerology
    http://www.amazon.com/Political-Ponerology-Science-Adjusted-Purposes/dp/1897244258
which describes the infecting of society by psychopaths. Psychopaths in power, afraid of being recognized and unmasked tried to kill him for this, the first scientific study of the causes and effects of evil. I ain't exactly "normal" myself but have a healthy dose of empathy for other humans. I have known serial killers personally..Richard Ramirez..when in LA in the 70's who effed my best friend up really bad. I didn't like the guy and knew something was askew and then saw him years later on CNN when he was sentenced and did his Hail Satan BS.

I think serial killers are a different breed from the massacre shooters like in Hatred. Massacre shooters usually want to die in a grand spectacle, to show others they were "special". Psychopaths tend to act more like spiders in the shadows.

We can't cherry pick who we label psychopathic just because we approve or don't approve of their conduct. Modern societies are hotbeds of sociopathy and scapegoating a violent video game is dangerously irresponsible.

Many of our democratically elected and actively supported leaders have an abundance of these psychopathic traits and wouldn't bat an eyelid about soldiers committing the very same atrocities in this video games towards actual human beings, unarmed civilians, women, and children. Militaries in countries on both sides of the Atlantic actively groom, support, and defend psychopathic murderers who butcher innocent civilians, women and children who we consider less human and less deserving of life. Where's the outrage?

Did you read about the recent Blackwater convictions? To this day, many conservatives and Islamophobes justify the butchering of innocent civilians in Iraq. This is real world evil, not some senseless depiction in a video game.

    Really?
Sounds very scientific, yeah. Evil is no scientific term in my eyes. That's religious fantasy world vocabulary.

Defining 4-8% of humans with psychological problems as non-humans is a very dangerous path. Somebody tried already to remove the psychological ill (since non-humans), but I don't want to pull a Godwin here.

Many people with such problems struggle hard with life, they need caring people and not people calling them non-humans. All people have good and bad sides, defining evil as just the psychopaths is very 1-dimensional. I actually consider people with empathy doing very bad things more evil (non-scientific sentence, therefore the word).

If I'm bored I maybe kill a village in Skyrim. Am I a psychopath? No. But from time to time it is fun to play one in a game.

Edit: @ippdev: I don't defend the game, read my previous posts to know what I think. But assuming only psychopaths will play it is wrong.
