    Hello all,

I'm a Mac user and new to Unity. I don't want to have to switch back and forth between Mac OS an Windows under Bootcamp so I've budgeted for a new gaming machine from Xidax computers. The only question is the OS. I know 10 is suppose to come out and be free for legit owners of 7 and 8. But in the mean time, am I better off with 7 or 8? The new machine will have a GTX 980, 32 gigs of memory, i7-5820K processor, and a Gigabyte GA-X99-Gaming 5 Motherboard.

    TIA!

    JP

I use both mac and win for dev, both Unity and UE

My dev machine is similar to yours - a i7 with gtx 980.
I am using 8.1. Works great, for the most part.

TBH The ui is kind of unintuitive....but it does work, and you start to get used to it after a long while .
10 is around the corner.... but I wouldnt use it yet.
My advice - go with 8.1.

BTW- My number one recommendation for Unity is to use Visual Studio instead of Mono Develop,
Mono Develop is maddening - the autocomplete sucks...VS is soooooo much better.
And express edition is even free.....

I prefer to do my Unity dev work in Windows now, simply because the machine is way faster and VS is light years better than mono develop.

    Good Luck!

Thanks! Nice to hear from someone who uses Mac and Windows. I was kind of leaning towards 8.1 since 10 is around the corner. I really have not done anything professionally on a Windows platform since Windows XP was introduced, so I'll probably go to lynda.com and get up to speed on the interface.

    Thanks again!
