    About the game

    Night Reverie is a Puzzle/Adventure game in which a child must solve the mystery behind the distortion of his house. Explore puzzle-filled environments and discover strange creatures living in the house as you reach the truth behind of what looks like a bizarre nightmare.

    The distorted version of your house is now home of many strange creatures. You may try to befriend some of these new inhabitants. Who knows what they are going through?

    Update 1: Testing lights​

    In Night Reverie, lighting is very important in order to create a proper atmosphere for the player. As the game focuses on puzzle solving and exploration of different rooms, we tested different lighting configurations to achieve an effect that fitted both the gameplay and the mood.

    Unity recently implemented their 2D lighting system and we really enjoy the new workflow when creating lights. In the past, we had to simulate this effect by using 3D lights and the workflow was totally different and time consuming.

    ​

    We achieved a gloomy effect for many rooms we are working on. We make sure the lights focus mostly on important spots so the player can have a clearer idea of what a room contains rather than just walking in the dark.

    ​

    Now that we have our overall lighting configuration approach in mind, we will proceed to apply it in the upcoming rooms we are implementing.

    Update 2: First Animations​

    The protagonist's room includes his favorite robot toy and a classic gaming console. We added a lightning configuration that made the room look dark but not so much, as the moonlight is coming directly from the window. We also used the lights to indicate interesting objects in the bedroom so the player doesn't miss a thing.


    The protagonist has a running animation and is followed by a mysterious flame. The running speed is currently being tested to determine what speed would be suitable for a smooth exploration.

    Update 3: Dialog System​

    Dialog is a major aspect in Night Reverie. As you interact with many objects, different dialogs will appear on screen so the player can learn more about the characters and the world. Puzzle solving also requires the interaction with different objects in the environments.

    We went for a traditional approach on the dialog system implementation. We show a portrait of the speaker and the text starts displaying character by character until the paragraph is done displaying.


    The video shows a test interaction with a bathtub in a bathroom. This is one of the explorable rooms in Night Reverie.

    We also implemented different reactions for the protagonist's portraits. This adds emotion to the different dialogs in the game.


    The garage is another explorable room in Night Reverie. Make sure to interact with different objects in order to learn more about the place and obtain useful items that may help you on your journey.

    Update 4: Mysterious character and obtaining items​

    Night Reverie is filled with mysterious characters and our newest one is no stranger to this fact. Deep inside the distorted house lives a creature inside a giant boot. Many curious interactions will take place with this character so make sure to inspect that big boot!

    Many items can be obtained in Night Reverie. You must use them in order to make progress around the puzzles in the house. Make sure to inspect every corner in order the find useful items.

    This is currently work in progress. We are working on animations for many objects such as the fridge to make interactions more interesting.
