Hi there! I've been playing around with game development for years now, but have recently decided to take it a bit more seriously. For starters, I'm definitely not stupid. Also, I don't believe to have unrealistic goals. My experience is incredibly limited and my skills are questionable at best. This is as much a project as it is training for my long-term plans. Which means I don't expect this to be perfect.

Now I have a few questions which may be quite difficult to answer.

I have decided to make something that is not necessarily a game in the strictest sense, but a 3D social platform. Setting is not important, but I want lively and believable avatars for my players. This should be a suitable alternative to the roleplay component of MUDs, at least my idea of it is. This could be used in a game later, but it, itself, is the most important thing to me at this moment - my dream if you would. What I want from this is the following...

Decent 3D models and overall graphics; not really important.
A lot of animations and a UI which makes them quick to use and seem natural.
A modular way to make your own animations piece by piece for more customization.
Presets that can be changed to for your character while "in-game" that may be used to portray a mood.
Changing the gait and overall the way a character holds his/her self depending on their preset.
Animations subdivided to body parts instead of the whole body parts, to make animations like walking while waving seem natural.
Context sensitive interaction with people depending on each others' presets.
    Very personalized player avatars/characters.

Now, by myself, how could somebody with my experience accomplish this? Programs I plan on using include the free version of Unity and possibly Blender (though I don't enjoy Blender too much, just can't afford anything). Are there any other programs I should look into? Does anybody have some project goals I should probably work towards, or a general outline that would work best? All tips and suggestions are welcome as well of course.

Oh and I plan to have this done by Q4 of 2015, giving it at least a few hours a day.
This goal doesn't seem crazy to me, but I've never tried something like this before. Should I make that longer or shorter, or am I right on target?

    Thank you so much.

I have decided instead to make a tiny racing game of sorts featuring a few unique ball-like machines. The scope is super small and I know how to do everything needed for the game already, I just need to actually do it. I'll be back in a few months after I complete my first true game.

    Thanks again!
