NEW UNITY 3D SKYPE CHAT GROUP - APP BUSINESS AND MONETIZATION WITH UNITY 3D NOOB TO ADVANCED ALL WELCOME!

We would love to have more unity devs join the conversation and connect and help each other out (only 300 slots available first come first served, free Unity Dev to Dev 24x7 chat!). That being said, this is a PROFESSIONAL level chat, so things like excessive swearing or uncalled for hostility, or even flaming or causing trouble, will not be tolerated. We want a healthy friendly environment for all users and guests in our chat, so please keep that in mind when you do come into our group.

LINK TO SKYPE GROUP (Browser Link - May not always work - Just add sale.rocket Abhinav Gupta manually if it does not):

SKYPE GROUP LINK - CLICK HERE

OR add sale.rocket (Abhinav Gupta) to your skype and I'll add you immediately.

CURRENT MEMBER COUNT: 60 of 296 spots available (LIMITED SPACE! Spots are going fast!)

MISSION STATEMENT: Lets all work together so we all make great money and get to do this full time forever and keep pushing our industry forward as a community of Mobile Industry developers, artists and professional people who use Unity 3D.

Hey all, this is a new skype chat group for all Unity 3D Developers run by app developers (And thanks to Sara Wallman from Unity who is helping us hand in hand to really grow this Skype Chat and help us to get even possibly some of the Unity Team to be online with us as well! - ALL DEVS ARE WELCOME, NOOB TO ADVANCED, totally positive environment).

GOALS OF CHAT (As people have been confused about this):
    1. A Fun friendly POSITIVE chat environment for Noob to Advanced Unity Developers
    2. Focus on the App Business and Monetization and Industry and helping each other to grow their app businesses using Unity
    3. Connecting others to each other in the industry and to also get connections to help take app developers and others in Unity to the next level.

I'd like to invite all Noob to Advanced Unity Developers to come join us for 24x7 Skype Unity Chat and interact with other Unity developers online 24x7.

Thanks to all Unity devs taking part and specifically for Sara W. from Unity team helping us out in getting into the Unity world :)

SOME OF THE GOALS AND BENEFITS OF THIS CHAT

    1. Positive Dev Environment for all devs

    2. App Business and Monetization info along with Unity 3D info (Learn from other devs what they are doing to grow their app businesses)

    3. Various reps visiting us online every now and again (From Chartboost to new App SDK's, we'll try and have people come in to say hello and answer questions on integration and even monetization and MORE!)

    4. Future group discounts for various services (Over time as the group grows, many companies in the industry may offer special discounts to devs. We try and go out to speak to artists, asset creators, sdk companies, etc. to come and speak to the group and even offer developer discounts to help you save money while learning about the latest stuff)

    5. A 24x7 chat environment (Chat in real-time with other developers)

    6. Dev-to-dev support (As per the timeframe of other devs, using team viewer devs can help each other out in real time to look over code or even point another struggling dev in the right direction. It's all about giving and showing love for other devs and helping each other out to build a solid community)

    7. FREE TO JOIN! Just download Skype :)

    8. MANY MORE BENEFITS over time :)

    CHAT FAQ:

    0. Isn't there another Unity Skype Group?

Yes there is (Thanks @hippocoder), located here: http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/119724-UNITY-Now-on-Skype

This is a second one focused on Positive noob to advanced chat and on the App Business and Monetization and Industry and helping other app devs use Unity to grow their businesses to the next level. All skype group chats are limited to 300 slots, so come join before slots are not available (FREE TO JOIN (I believe both are) - Positive chat only please, fully supportive environment). We welcome everyone, but the overall goal is to try and focus on the app business and monetization :)

    1. Please only Positive Unity 3D/Dev discussion only. The goal is to have a positive environment for everyone to learn and share. NO NEGATIVITY/FIGHTING/FLAMING, etc. will be tolerated. There are only 300 spots available via Skype Chat, and only available to devs who agree to be supportive to other devs who are also learning.

    2. I want to market/I have a friend who wants to market something to the group, can we do it?

Yes and no. The goal of the skype dev chat is to keep things dev/Unity 3D related. If you just launched your game, thats PERFECT, definitely promote it. If you or your friend have some APP INDUSTRY related stuff (like your friend is from a certain SDK company that app developers use, like LeadBolt or Revmob or something like that, that is industry related), then totally fine to have them come in and say hello to our group here for 30 min or so. If your grandma made a website and wants to share that with the world...as much as we love grandma's cooking, promoting her website thats most likely unrelated, is not acceptable here. Hope that helps you understand what form of marketing would be acceptable. It should be stuff that would help make our app devs better and greater at what they do or can help out in the business in some way.

    3. Can I speak my mind about things?

In general yes, but if ur gonna rant and cause trouble, then no, leave that to the forums. This is a POSITIVE developer environment and no form of trouble (in-fighting, negative behavior, flaming, etc.) will be tolerated and you will be booted.

    4. Who are you (gamescorpion) and why did you start the Skype Group Chat?

I'm nobody really, just another "grateful to be here" developer just like yourselves, but my goal and vision was to see a unified helpful developer environment that would be open to helping each other out. Building a solid community is what this is all about and long lasting relationships that are outside of just Forum only environments. That being said, I have built over 40+ apps in over 10+ markets and make apps and games full time and go around North America speaking about it as an App Business trainer. I'm here to build the environment of positive helpful developers that I did not have when I started in this business and something like this would have made such a huge difference for me. The goal is to try and get other devs who are stronger than you are in a certain area, and vice versa to help devs who are weaker than you in another area, so that the combined efforts breed great positive synergy and an environment of great successful app developers.

    5. What if i need more help?

Simply type in /help in the command line to figure out commands

    6. Is this Unity 3D Skype Chat owned by Unity?

No. It is run by developers and was specifically started by Abhinav (Nav) Gupta from Game Scorpion as a place for developers to work together and help each other out. Unity 3D Skype chat should be looked at as an additional help to the forums and not a replacement for it. It truly is an additional amazing tool that goes hand in hand with the forums.

    7. What is Team Viewer?

Team Viewer (http://www.teamviewer.com) is a tool that many devs use to interact with each other in real time where one dev can take control of another dev's mouse and screen to help them out with a programming or related problem on their computer from anywhere in the world.

    8. Who are the Skype Chat Group Moderators?

Abhinav Gupta (MASTER MOD) - gamescorpion - sale.rocket (Skype)
Amit Niraj (MOD KNIGHT - Lvl. 2) - queryamit - queryamit (Skype)
Juan Belon (MOD KNIGHT - Lvl. 2) - juaxix - Juan Belon (Skype)
ShinyBox LLC (MOD KNIGHT - Lvl. 2) - ShinyBox LLC - ShinyBox LLC (Skype)
Archania (MOD KNIGHT - Lvl. 1) - archaniawork - Archania (Skype)
Shubham Vij (MOD KNIGHT - Lvl. 1) - shubham.vij - Shubham Vij (Skype)
Paul Lipovits (MOD KNIGHT - Lvl. 1) - carking1996 - Colonel Apple (Skype)

    Mod Roles:

MASTER MOD - Final decision making powers, can veto any decision (rarely happens, only in extreme circumstances)

MOD KNIGHTS - Mod Knights will be in place when the Master Mod is not around and can generally handle all the same Mod calls such as kick/ban, adding, etc. The various levels are just based on order of power based on situation. If a lvl 1 knight cannot handle a situation, they will pass it onto a lvl 2 mod. If lvl 2 mods need a higher say they will go to the master mod. Master mod is the final say in this chat.

    9. What is SR?

SR stands for Skype Refresh. It is a simple keyword we created to be typed in by users in Skype chat who experience lag in messages. Apparently skype keeps a cache of the messages and they seem to only appear after you type something. For this we came up with a common code word called SR (Skype Refresh) so everyone knows that you are just trying to catch up to the various messages. Anyone who types in SR will have that specific message treated like a non-message and will just ignore it. Think of it like COUGHING or SNEEZING in public. No one really seems treat it like a conversation. This is the same idea in skype chat and will allow users to update the skype cache on their end so they can get up to date on the latest messages.

    10. Windows 8 Skype?

This solution was posted by user Snake Hunter: "Hey Everybody, I had that same problem when i tried to join into the skype group today, seems like everybody was right, it has something to do with Microsoft Accounts being merged with your Skype on Windows 8.

The easiest way that worked for me is the following:

    1) Go Skype Website and sign in.
    2) Click on your name which is on the top right of the screen.
    3) Click on your profile where is your picture its below "My Account".
    4) Just scroll down and uncheck the Microsoft account link.

    11. Skype Tags setup (Not required but can help categorize your request to others even more and can help reduce the amount of pings on your screen from items that you may not wish to see.)

Note: Once setup, you will only be alerted when any of these tags are created and not when normal chat is going on. Do this only if you do not wish to be disturbed too often and use tags yourself in order to help others understand your conversation.

    A) To setup skype tags, simply click on Conversation => Notifications => 'Notify me only if these words are mentioned'

    B) Copy and paste the following tags:

[report] [help] [collaboration] [paid] [lfw] [advice] [showcase] YOUR_NAME [wtb] [wts] [guest_speaker] [scheduled_meeting] [showcase] [market_news] [asset_sale]

    C) Hit Okay and you will now have a tag list saved!

    TAG EXPLANATION:

[report] - use this to report another user to mods
[help] - use if you require help in Unity
[collaboration] - use if you are collaborating a post, link to the thread and say what you are looking for.
[paid] - use if you are looking for a contractor/artist/developer, or a freelancer for hire etc.
[lfw] - use if you are looking for work (paid/unpaid)
[advice] - use this if you are seeking advice on a topic
[showcase] - use this if you are showcasing your work
YOUR_NAME - use this to alert you when someone types in your name. Use your skype name here.
[wtb] - Want To Buy...use this if you are requesting or looking to buy something
[wts] - Want To Sell...use this if you are looking to sell something
[guest_speaker] - used by mods to specify upcoming guest apperances
[scheduled_meeting] - used by mods to specify an upcoming scheduled meeting with the group
[market_news] - used to tell everyone about the latest market news (please also provide a link for reference)
[asset_sale] - used to tell everyone about a new asset on sale in the Unity Asset Store

    ==================

I hope to see many of you online on the new Unity 3D Skype Chat soon!

    God Bless!

@willemsenzo: Awesome, This can be a second one as Skype groups are limited to 300 users :)

I'll also join up on the other one as well personally, but a second group wont hurt the eco-system :)

Don't forget there is also the Unity Bar Grill skype channel as well which people are welcome to join, just nag Archania and he'll get someone to add you :) Discussion is open and there's a few developers using UE as well as Unity. More the merrier, good to see the community being proactive.

Alright, I'll join. One thing, though, is that I've literally never used Skype and I'm not sure how all this works. (I have downloaded it, though).

Edit: got it figured out :)

I joined the group, and now left it. Here are my thoughts to anyone considering joining:

    1. If you're from the other chat, great. You'll fit in well here. The chat is like a close group of friends from the other chat, and if you weren't from that chat, you're not going to fit in and will probably feel like an outcast. I never felt comfortable in the chat.

    2. They mostly don't discuss game development, and often act quite immature (lots of children in it, rather than actual professional developers). I didn't join to talk about girls or play high school social games. I joined to discuss game development with other developers.

    3. Sometimes you get no answers when you ask for help.

    4. When you tell them that you would prefer they talk about something more... you know, related to game development? They attack you like a bunch of high school children would attack someone.

    5. It's not newbie-friendly. And it's hardly even intermediate-friendly. Most of the kids in there consistently brag about all the things they can do in C#. They're not supportive of new people who are learning at all. Unless you really know your stuff, I probably wouldn't recommend joining.

Overall, not very impressed and wouldn't consider joining unless some members weren't in there.

Edit: as a note, I'm not necessarily saying the chat is "bad" in general. It's just bad for people who would be upset by the points I made above. But for many, I'm sure it would be just fine.

Bar Grill? I don't know anything about the other chat, except that there was another chat. Sounds more fitting to what I saw in this chat. All the talk about girls and crap seems fitting for "bar grill". But for this chat, one of the notes was: only talk about Unity or game development. So that's what I was expecting.

The bar and grill is for developers to talk about development. Offtopic is allowed, but essentially we're currently discussing how to use Particle[] array to side step draw calls ie a super version of batched sprites by using them manually. If you need help in the bar and grill use the [help] tag and someone will get flagged to help you.

@Jason: Firstly really sorry your experience wasn't as awesome as I hoped it would be, let me address some of your issues that you outlined and I've spoken to my awesome mods who are really helpful and we all wish for everyone to have an amazing experience in the chat, that being said as its a new chat, not everyone can be around 24x7 even though we try to be, and I'll add more mods with different time zones to help keep the chat positive and supportive for all -

    1. If you're from the other chat, great. You'll fit in well here. The chat is like a close group of friends from the other chat, and if you weren't from that chat, you're not going to fit in and will probably feel like an outcast. I never felt comfortable in the chat.

Jason I apologize, yes it seems that we had a bit of overflow from the other group chat. The friendship part is awesome as we want everyone to treat each other in a positive way, but never should anyone feel like an outcast in our chat or uncomfortable and for that I am truly sorry and hope you will give the chat another chance in the future. By all means, please do join the other group as well (Link is here - http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/119724-UNITY-Now-on-Skype) as no one ever wanted anyone to feel that Unity was not awesome, it totally is and I hope that you get that feeling of support from any of the two groups (unfortunately it didn't happen the way I hoped it would on ours).

    2. They mostly don't discuss game development, and often act quite immature (lots of children in it, rather than actual professional developers). I didn't join to talk about girls or play high school social games. I joined to discuss game development with other developers.

I definitely agree where you are coming from, at the same time however keep in mind there are all levels of developers and many age groups there. We will end up having conversations that are random at times, and many times we will have serious conversation as well on Unity and the App Business. The goal ofcourse is to help everyone grow and be in a supportive environment, but there will be times where devs are going to just mess around. When you get to a point where you are ever feeling uncomfortable/threatened, etc. or you really think that there is something that just doesn't belong, simply type in the tag [reportuser] and let one of the mods know about the issue. We will then have a chat with the offending user and ask them to kindly refrain from causing issues (if they are) or will try and keep the peace. The goal is not to solidly keep the entire chat on topic, because that would be impossible, however the environment being positive and supportive and friendly is really important and will be upheld in all circumstances.

    3. Sometimes you get no answers when you ask for help.

Unfortunately we cant expect everyone to answer you with answers to your questions. Keep in mind this is a voluntary group and everyone is there on their own time. No one is obligated to help out immediately, even though we encourage it. Also being a group that is full of users of all types of levels and skills, you may not have users who have the skills at the time you ask a question (Depending on the complexity). You wont always get answers to your questions and I can only refer you to also ask your questions on the unity forums as well should you have any issues that someone cannot answer in the chat.

    4. When you tell them that you would prefer they talk about something more... you know, related to game development? They attack you like a bunch of high school children would attack someone.

Yes that one was an unfortunate situation, part of the growing pains (We've only been up for a few days). Once again my most sincere apologies for that, it is not how I wanted the group to operate or become, and it will not be happening again like that, and I've briefed my awesome mods on this and we will all be focusing even harder to make sure that things like this do not happen in the future. We are focused on building an awesome group that is helpful and once again all I can do is offer my apologies as the creator of this group.

    5. It's not newbie-friendly. And it's hardly even intermediate-friendly. Most of the kids in there consistently brag about all the things they can do in C#. They're not supportive of new people who are learning at all. Unless you really know your stuff, I probably wouldn't recommend joining.

Once again I apologize that you did not feel welcome as a newbie. This was never the intention, everyone should feel comfortable in there, and once again, as stated earlier, I have talked to my amazing mods who are helping me out to make sure that everyone feels welcome. Not everyone knows C# and even though there are those who may be masters at it, there are others who know nothing about it. We will be striving to make sure that as a group we never let anyone feel like they can't ask for the help they need, no matter how proficient they are in development.

Overall, not very impressed and wouldn't consider joining unless some members weren't in there.

Once again, my most sincere apologies both publicly and via IM to you about your unfortunate experience which I can only attribute to growing pains. We have addressed the issues and look forward to upholding a better environment for all.

    God Bless!

I understand this, which is why I wasn't having an issue for a while. But today they pushed me past my limit with it. There's a point when it just gets too far out of hand, I think... that was very much ridiculous.

I understand this as well. This wasn't why I left the group - I left the group because of the immaturity and ... well beyond simply being 'off topic'. I mean, of the entire day I was in that chat there wasn't a thing about game development being discussed. The most talked about thing was 'girls'.

I probably shouldn't have included this point about being helped, as I didn't have a real issue here.

Not having me in the group isn't a big deal. But I wanted to make this point because I think I wasn't the only one who was feeling that way. I'm glad to see things are improving.

@Jason: Yes 100%, as I stated, unfortunately I wasn't around during the time. Part of the growing pains of a community, and as I said its only been 3-4 days now, so hopefully going forward things will become better, but definitely unacceptable behavior is just not tolerated. In any case, I hope you consider our group again, or even the other one, but whatever you choose, please do remember Unity is an Awesome tool and it was never the purpose of this skype chat to make anyone ever feel otherwise, so once again I apologize and I hope your Unity learning goes smooth and amazing and we hope you will reconsider the group in the future!

    God Bless!

@All: Thanks for the awesome support, we are now at nearly 40 users in just about 3.5 days! We're right on track to hitting the target by the end of April (SPOTS ARE FILLING UP FAST SO SECURE YOUR FREE SPOT!). Keep in mind, this is an exclusive group that focuses on the App Business and Unity Dev, and helping users take their app business to the next level and using Unity. From Noob to Advanced, the goal and vision of the group is for a friendly and fun environment for all users coming on board!

I look forward to seeing more new devs come out and join up!

    See you online!

If the point of the second group (or one of the points) is to provide an additional 300 spaces for a chat, why are many people taking up a spot in both groups? Doesn't that defeat the purpose?

@Jason: Yes you bring up a good point, so I'm starting to differentiate our group a bit more (And I'll write this out in the FAQ on the first page, thanks for pointing it out).

Our groups focus is on Unity Dev (Noob to Advance) and on the Mobile App Business, Monetization and Industry as a whole, how to make money, how to grow your business, etc. Everyone helping each other to grow their respective businesses and use Unity to help support that.

Thats the best definition that I can give at the moment, so its both a dev chat and a business chat (And ofcourse a free for all discussion sometimes too as you've seen). But thats the overall vision and goal of the chat. I'll write that in now into the FAQ and thanks again for pointing it out :)

Congratulations to our new Mods and our new Mod system. We now have 4 Mods who will be helping me maintain the chat and help to grow it :)

Abhinav Gupta (MASTER MOD) - gamescorpion - sale.rocket (Skype)
Amit Niraj (MOD KNIGHT - Lvl. 2) - queryamit - queryamit (Skype)
Juan Belon (MOD KNIGHT - Lvl. 2) - juaxix - Juan Belon (Skype)

    God Bless!

Being a member of both groups for awhile now I can say that I enjoy both. There is both off topic and lots of on topic discussion in both groups so there's a good opportunity to learn, teach and make new friends.

I have a few questions regarding the group. How many people are experienced and able to help people? Over in the bar and grill we have unity staff, former EA, Volition, and a variety of others. I was there when it was started and we've always had people who are experienced(hippocoder) with years if not decades of experience in game dev. Who in this group is experienced . Also, what makes this group better than the bar and grill? We have tons of people, been around 3 years, we do hangouts, all sorts of topics. This is just a copy of it, sure you aim to stay on topic, but honestly I find there is no pros to this group, at least compared to the Bar and Grill.

Unity Bar Grill is a much more suitable environment, and much larger. Also more experienced and friendly people. Just my opinion(fact), I hope you'll find yourself over at the B&G sometime soon.

    Cheers,
    Khelton

Let the two groups exist independently, stop comparing them. They shouldn't be the same thing.

Khelton. I have no issues with the 2 groups. Let them be. You don't like it. We get it but please grow up a little bit here and let it go. Some people just want to talk about development and not the other things that go on in the B&G. Simple as that.
