I am currently working on a Kerbal Space Program like-game, and so far, it's in a very, VERY, early stage, similar to KSP version 0.0. Here's a clip (sorry if I stutter):

I don't really know what direction I should take this...so any suggestions?

    Please post in the comments!

Guys, he has a playable prototype. This is not just your regular noob. This is an authentic developer in the making.

@addemup congrats on making a working prototype early. It's not much, but it's further then many noobs with great ideas get.

I strongly recommend the learn section. There are some great resources available there.

As too design direction, you've still got a fairly blank slate at the moment. If you are going to go down the simulation route like KSP I would suggest looking into joints, and figuring out how to join components together at run time.

On the other hand you could make a 3D space combat game. Or a match three flight game. Or a FPS that just happens to have a spaceship in it. The list of possibilities is endless. I would suggest picking a small goal, completing it, and moving on to a new game.

The game design section if this forum is also good for bouncing ideas around in, once you have a more fleshed out idea.

    UPDATE!!!

I have added a sphere that (temporarily) serves as the planet (it was made in Blender).

By the way, @BoredMormon, should I use a fixed joint or a hinged joint?

Really depends on your use case. I don't see enough info in this thread to make a recommendation. In fact, I don't see mention of joints aside from your question.

Well, I'll be using the joints for when the spaceship collides with the planet, causing the spaceship to explode.

And I was wondering, how would you make gravity? Also, I want to know how to calculate the distance between sea level and the spaceship (essentially altitude).

And I was wondering, how would you make gravity?

    - Get direction to nearby planet, and do basic physics on moving objects position towards it while holding its momentum.

Also, I want to know how to calculate the distance between sea level and the spaceship

    - Get again direction towards planet and use RayCast to get distance towards terrain.
