Hello, I am completely new to Unity and Game Design. Do you have any recommendations as a place to start learning game design? I come from a Art and Design background. I am more interested in the art and graphics side than the programming side. Thanks for any help.

Game design is the art of researching, understanding and documenting games in an efficient way while also leading projects. My tip is that you google "Game Design" and "Ludology", it is also recommended that you google "Game Design Template" but... No game design document is identical to the next one, processional documents drastically change because they are tailored to the projects and the people working on them.
Game design is its own specialization within the industry and the one that got the most theory because you also have to learn a lot about the other many specializations and top it of with leadership and management...
There is no one place to really learn it because it is such a wide topic and it takes lots of time to master... but... its fun ;)

Art is like in most other industries because it is such a well researched area, the game industry just took the existing knowledge and adapted it for its own uses. Think 3D movies but with more restrictions, scenes that react in real time to events etc and everything rendered on a single computer and still have to look good ;) Its a good idea to check for a forum that is specialized in this area... you didn't hint at your level of knowledge so I am going to guess for now that you need a complete introduction course.

Start with the first topic created on this forum and then proceed to the second one and after that the third one.

If you treat every topic as a study topic and follow all of the links and read all of the documents texts and articles mentioned...

It's kind of like an education.

    *for free, I might add

Thanks for the replies. Good advice. I don't have any game design experience. Only 3d modeling and sculpting. I would like to make game art and maybe game characters. Thanks for the help.

If you want to make game art and characters, that's not really game design, it's game art. Game design is more like what the rules of the game should be and what the story is.

There isn't a forum here dedicated to game art creation; it's not something you really do in Unity itself. You'd be better off heading to sites like Polycount and CGTalk.

Ok, thank you. I figured if I am going to make Game art for Unity I better know how to make a game in Unity. Thanks for the help.

Even if you aren't that interested in the development side of things, you may want to try your hand at a few Unity tutorials just to see a bit of what goes into making a game. And if you can learn enough to do a bit on your own, you may have an easier time getting things off the ground. It never hurts to have a better understanding of the process.

I agree. And I do have an interest in the process as a whole. I just know where I want to put my focus. Thanks for the reply.
