So I've got a nice collection of obstacles for my game, but after getting it together I'm noticing that I'm lacking in obstacles for space. Any suggestions would be welcome.

    So far I have:
    -Space Shuttle
    -Satallite
    -Asteroid
    -UFO
    -Comet
    -Shooting Star
    -Black Hole

What else do you think I could add?

Wreckage of destroyed spacecraft and space stations:

    r-DEATH-STAR-PETITION-large570.jpg deadspace3-2013-02-11-16-42-25-30.jpg

That could account for upwards of 50% of all space obstacles if you swing it right.
There are some pretty big space stations in fiction. Think Babylon five.

Beside that, though... you have to consider that there's really nothing in space, so you're doing good with the list you have.

That's why we call it space!

Yeah, for sure I want to do the parody stuff, but I really want to focus on my MVP right now and I think that might be out of scope.

No... I just mean generic floating metal stuff in space. I gave you those to get the idea of what it would look like.

That's funny. I just scrolled down to post a comment and saw yours. lol

Anyway, yeah if it is a game then you can make your own reality. So cows in space works fine (and not just the one that jumped over the moon). Maybe earth's gravity has become so weak all manner of stuff normally found on the surface of our planet is now up there floating around. You can come up with anything needed to support why the stuff is up there.

The biggest danger in space isn't the stuff you see, it's the micro particles travelling at super high speed. These may not appear in the view port but may appear on some sort of detection system, or a slightly shimmering area if there is a 'cloud' of small particles.

But you'd have to call it Ravlum just so it is different

Actually, small references to TV. Shows would be amusing:
A destroyed space station with a bit of a 5 showing
    A trashed thunderbird 3
    A floating bending robot etc

Space ponies and cows that travel through black holes. This summarizes the creation of the universe.

with alien space worms that stick their heads out?
or ones that affect the direction your ship is moving by applying a force that rotates the player around it & draws it towards the centre.

More seriously: perhaps space junk could be an obstacle? I think we've all mentioned that in one form or another.

Going with that space junk theme, perhaps your player would find entire battlefields filled with flotsam space junk the result of a chaotic space war?

Maybe even life in space? Like, literally? I've seen in some Star Wars tv shows and stuff creatures which live within nebulae, possibly breathing the gases within and preying on other creatures, even spaceships? I know that's impossible in reality because in reality if you're inside a nebula you won't know it. The gases and particles are so spread out its quite impossible to see from the inside. But most people apart from scientists don't know this.

Possibly even abandoned space weaponry, like mines, automated defenses, the oddly still functioning automated defense turret attached to a downed ship with its reactor still working but badly damaged.

Radiation clouds are another possibility. Just give the player a warning, and apply damage over time if they enter the field.

    Aliens
    bodies, wreckage
    probes, drones
escape pods with droids or humans aboard.
    Mercenaries such as Han Solo
Escorts for Queens and Kings, VIP's.
Space storms, solar flares, radiation fields that require better shields on your ship or something
    God?

And space is pretty much unexplored for 99.99% so do whatever you can think up and add a space sauce to it.

As far as obstacles go, I think one of the best things to add is some totally meaningless apparatus about 1km long, preferably of simple silhouette and geometrical in shape (lattice, ring, cube, sphere etc), pretty much the same material and color all the way through, with a bit of meaningless detail here and there, and totally wrecked on at least one side. Makes it look like the gods of space dropped something during some ancient war :D

If you were making a game where you flew at high speed through space and you need some obstacles, I don't think you can beat gigantic pieces of space junk :D

Just watch some games like Drox Operative, Space Pirates And Zombies, Space Rangers, Eve Online, etc, and see what fits to your world and what doesn't.

Okay, so some things could've been said already, and maybe my ideas won't be too original, but I am fan of space games (Big love, EVE Online, SPAZ, X3 and really many more), and I also slowly learn some astrophysics as a hobby (nothing too advanced, mainly just cause of interest), so am post my list of ideas here. Ofc it depends on how realistic you want your game to be. But I'll just post all what comes to my mind:
-Zombies!!! (partially a joke here, but I loved SPAZ. Amazing game)
-Anomalies. It could be something that distracts vision, disables parts of your ship and what not.
    -Wreckages and derelics.
-Ofc pirates. Their randomly spawning bases/wormholes/whatever suits your game.
    -Nebulaes. Those can be deadly.
    -Enemy base ships.
-Portal hub. Maybe not exactly an obstacle, but just look at how awesome X3's Xenon Hub is!
    -Ofc asteroids.
-Probably could count as pirates, but some ancient drones or idk.
-Random encounters, like solar flares. Just make sure to balance those right.
-Asteroid storm. Or a single big comet if you want something more realistic.
-Easter eggs. Those can be an obstacle, too.
    -Planets.
    -Space stations.
-Multiple factions. Those can be at war, which is always an obstacle.
-Space animals. Pure silly fiction, but I just looked at STARWHALS in my steam library.
    -Planetary defense weapons.
-Solar energy. Or fuel. Or energy consumption in general.
-Drugs in space. Lol. Like nebula with anomalies. Inspired by Postal 2 and EVE.
-And physics themselves. They kill kerbals.

Honestly, just dropped whatever comes to my mind.
