Need help with animation

    I’m really new to animating and I was wondering how I would go about having a idle animation when his gun is put away and a idle when his gun is out.

    use 2 different idle animations.
    or
    Mecanim layers and a mask to sort which body parts are fed which animations.
    or
    animate the gun, and attach the arm with IK.
