Hello, I have just come back to unity on my personal computer a few days ago and was looking to start up a project that I had worked on in the past. The first time I tried to open the project, it worked and i was able to continue with the game. The very next day when I wanted to work on it a little bit more, it would act like it was going to load up, but it just didn't show up on the screen or on the start bar at the bottom of my screen. I looked at the task manager and under the "Background Processes" tab, there was a task running called "Unity Editor". So, I assumed that it was just running in the background and i could maybe just get it to load in the "Apps" tab, but I couldn't find a way to do it. I also tried booting the project from the folder itself, but that didn't work either. After numerous attempts and a couple days later, I still couldn't get it to work, even after reinstalling Unity. Does anyone have any idea how I could open my project or restore it into a new project?

    Thanks!
    -A very frustrated fella

I would suggest starting a new project and then import everything from that project into it. If you start with everything and the same thing happens then at least you can start again and import sections at a time until you see what the cause of the problem is

I tried to create a project and all it does is it will compile all the necessary things to load up the project itself, but it will not load to where I can see the Unity Editor

It sounds like your saying two different things there. If you can't make even a blank project load up its definitely your installation and worth sending Unity a bug report

    Possible solution:
    Short answer:
This could be caused by an USB device, like in my case.

    Longer answer:
I had the same problem. I read a lot about switching off my anti Virus software or better to set up exclusions for Unity. But nothing worked. I reinstalled Windows 10 and installed Unity almost as the first program (right after chrome and a few motherboard drivers). Didn't work either. Unity shows the start screen. I try loading a project. It won't open the editor but will start a background process that can't be killed either.
Turns out Unity doesn't like certain USB devices (which I all left plugged in during Win10 re-install). In my case it was the "ZD T Wired Gaming Controller for PC" that I had bought a few weeks ago. The moment I unplug it the Unity editor opens. Once its open and I plug this Game Controller back in, Unity Editor freezes and I can' even close it. Unplugging again ... everything works as it should.
