I'm not sure I like that.
I see the need for it yeah, but it clearly states that Google has no interest to solve the hardware F***-mentation problem from chinese cheapsake manufacturers at all to get a more consistent platform and experience.

Agreed. The whole fragmentation problem is too messy. But looks like not a bad thing either for multiple apk. Am thinking of linking and downloading parts which might make downloading easier.

Couldn't agree more with dreamora, this is a clear statement from Google saying that they won't solve the fragmentation problem and that most probably they never will, since the manufacturers seem to have the big G on a leash..

Well that is true, but it could be a temporary fix sort of.

While I don't draw a different inference than Dreamora, I do take a different message from this. Google are admitting they cannot solve the fragmentation problem, but we already knew that, didn't we? Did anyone have reasonable expectations that such a thing was possible? I mean dream territory, perhaps, but not realistic prospects, right? At least giving us some tools to try to mitigate the problems is better than burying their heads in the sand and pretending it's not happening. And let's be honest, Google *have* done precisely that on a number of issues with Android, so I for one am glad that this will no longer be one of them.

This is pretty good news if you ask me. Now all they need to do is fix the numerous bugs in the market/google checkout and my inbox won't be full of support e-mails every day. :)

There is only one situation where I actually consider it good, needed and a "fix" and thats Android 3.x vs 2.x thanks to googles decision to make fragmentation even worse by not going with a unified OS as Apple

Wait till we have x86 and mips android phones.

    Then it will be 4 architectures (armv5,armv7,x86,mips) * 3 texture compression formats * 3 screen sizes * 3 screen densities :)

armv5 will hopefully be dropped with 2.4, even google can not trash support forever and its not in their interest either.
    Android 3 cut crap too

Anyone here tried it? My current game (still in development) runs very smooth on low end ARMv6 VFP devices, but I only planned to make the game available for ARMv7 devices. Should I make it available to those ARMv6 devices too?

Since this post is Multiple APKs about, I am wondering if anybody could point me in the right direction:

I am developing an AR app using ARCore, but ARCore is quite limited in compatibility, even 2020 brand new devices could be ARCore unsupported, so I've decide to write 2 version of the same app:

    1. The Main APP: ARCore required with URP & post processing for several FX, about 45fps on mid-high range devices, with a decent Image Tracking performance, not as good as Vuforia, but acceptable. The problem with this app is it is supported just by 635 devices according to the Play Store Device Catalogue available after upload the APK

    2. The alternative APP: Doesn't require ARCore, because I've used a 3rd party AR engine, but this engine doesn't support URP, so this version will use the built in render and no post processing, this app could run up to 20fps on low range devices, 30fps on mid-range like MotoG5, and up to 60fps on high-range ones.

So the question is: I need to upload both APKs but I want APK for APP 1 be available only for ARCore supported devices, and APK for APP 2 be available only to the NOT ARCore supported devices, this way my app could be available to thousands of devices instead of a few hundreds.

Is this can be done?, how could achieve that?, I will appreciate a lot any light on this matter.
