In unity 4 I have a FBX mesh with a single animation or some 1519 frames, this represents about 40 different animation clips, in the animation editor I split this down into the individual frame ranges i.e. Idle, move, run, jump etc... After testing the animations I tried to copy the asset folder with the material and textures to a different project. When I open the FBX in my new project all the split animations entries are gone.. What am I doing wrong, how do I get all the animation definitions from one project to another?

The correct way of bringing assets from one project to another is to use packages. So go on your model or prefab in the project view and then right click and select export package. Then save it. It will export all the files that rely on it usually. Open the new project and double click on the package you saved and it will ask to import it or use import package in the menu.
