Been wanting to make this thread for a while. This new forum seems to be the place for it.

It'd be great to get peoples experiences on how they've marketed their games, the success of the different types of marketing and how it ties in with the characteristics of the game itself (Triple-A, Indie, PC, Mobile, etc).

Please share your experiences and ideas, and hopefully people can learn how to tailor their marketing to their game more effectively. Let us know of any crazy new marketing techniques you think are working too.

Example (Disclaimer: This isn't a real example, just making up the details)
    Game Name: <Game name>
    Platforms: iOS/Android
    Genre: Action
    <Other Details>
    Marketing Budget
    : $100
    ----
Used: YouTube Result: Very Good Cost: $50
Details: Paid certain small YouTuber who normally, focuses on "X" type of games, $50 for a playthrough video. Had large click-through rate, and mostly positive feedback.
    ----
Used: AdWords Result: Not Great Cost: $50
Details: Used Google AdWords. Didn't get a decent click-through rate and wasn't cost efficient

Hopefully everyone's posts will impact someones marketing campaign in some way!

That might become interesting! I share my download and sales numbers in my blog (signature below).

I once tried paid marketing but can't really recommend it at least with a small budget. ;)

What does this have to do with game *design*? Marketing it about selling a game, not designing it.

Business is considered part of design, well says the sticky topic. Admittedly I was unsure whether to post it here before reading that.

    I assume you mean this:

It's saying that how you make money from the game can affect its design, but that doesn't mean the advertising. It means what the gamer pays for. IAP vs up-front cost, etc.

If you can legitimately tell me that how you market your game changed how you designed your game, I'll admit defeat on this. But nothing I saw in your first post said anything about the actual design of the game.

The main issue with the forums is there are at least two that are missing. One being Asset Creation and the other being Marketing. It is surprising that neither has a dedicated forum here.

Yeah that's what I meant, might have just misunderstood it. Mind you wouldn't virality come under marketing? Yeah I agree with Gar, it needs it's own dedicated forum, especially as it keeps getting mentioned as 50% of game development.

Is this design related? Not yet. It could be, if you shift to how to DESIGN games that are marketable. Moving to Gossip.

Ok, thanks Gigi, glad that's resolved!

Right, back to the topic now?
