Hi, I am fresh out of the box with Unity. I have been working in maya for months creating assets and such, and I think I am finally ready to start creating small games to build up a programming knowledge. Visual Studio 2015 came with my Unity, but most tutorials and people use Monodevelop. I have both Mono and Visual on my computer now. Which one will benefit me the best in the long term of game making in unity? SORRY if this is an extreme noob question.

I would say monodevelop first as it is probably more easier to setup, in that you don't have to set it up at all.

Overtime, I've actually moved to sublime with my own custom snippets as it is more lightweight to use.

I would also suggest MonoDevelop as its included with unity and very lightweight in comparison to Visual Studio 2015 which is a space hog in my opinion. I'm a Visual Studio veteran but I have also started using Sublime Text 3 as its very lightweight and fast, though it will need little customization before you get everything up and running properly if you choose this option.

It's largely a matter of personal preference. Once you've selected one you aren't restricted to it. You can switch any time.

If you're working on a Windows machine why in the world would you choose MonoDevelop over VS these days? With the recent integration it just seems crazy to pick MonoDevelop. Is there something that MD does better than VS that I'm not aware of? VS is faster, has more features, and fewer bugs.

I agree, but MD is a smaller application. I think my VS copy is 8GB, while MD is around 1GB, IIRC.

You're probably right, but my VS is worth the extra 7 gigs.

I love VS, never going back to MD. :) Still it's whatever you prefer.

MD is free~ But without that to worry about, VS is superior in terms of interface...I am running MD because I need a lighter version on my laptop...
