The toolbar with save buttons is gone in Monodevelop 4, and from what I can tell the makers of Monodevelop removed them because files save automatically when you build and run. But with Unity, we don't build and run from Monodevelop.

So has anyone discovered a way to get the save icons back?

Is there anyway to get back even any of the old toolbars?

While I agree, this is yuck, you can use control-s to save the one file you're looking at or control-shift-s to save all.

I've taken to mashing those buttons every minute or so just because I don't trust monodev 4.x due to the mobile bloat in Xamarin. It's done a search-and-replace instead of a find for me one too many times.

So now every time I want to save, I have to press CTRL+SHIFT+S, and every time I want to go back I have to press CTRL+ALT+LEFT??!? That last one needs two hands.

Why not leave the toolbar for those who want it? Does everything need to be streamlined for neophytes? Aren't programmers supposed to be ok with complicated interfaces? F'ing assholes.

Ok well I switched the keybinding for "Save All" to ctrl+S. I guess that will do for now.

Also, I realized the back and forward buttons were the one thing that remain in the toolbar by default, so I suppose I can live with this.

I miss it too, use a keyboard shortcut or menu to save is ridiculous, and the small indicating that the script is not saved is not very visible, I'm not talking about the Solution Explorer which is buggy ...

On their blog they explain that he wanted to be closer to XCODE for the good of all ... pfff bullshit

I agree as well. Small things like having the Save/Undo/Redo buttons light up when there's been a change is useful too when you are working on multiple files at once, more quickly seeing in which you've changed anything. And making it look more like Xcode... :/

Not that i wold need the save button (hammering cmd+ S all the time) but to be able to configure the editor like the user need it wold be nice.

A shortcut to save, switch to unity and play would be sort of nice.

I can't let this thread die yet. I am very sad about this change, and hippocoder's idea is swell! I particularly miss the ability to visually asses saved file states.

    I second this.
I know it's more of a xamarin change but there must be a way to bring it back. I would use the shortcuts but every time I do Ctrl+S the cursor moves all the way to the beginning of the document, losing my place. It's infuriating.

How did you get the back and forward buttons to show, I can't find it anywhere!?
To get back these buttons would help a LOT

The forwards and backwards buttons are now two small left right arrows at the top, just to the left of the tabs selecting each script.

Took me ages to figure it out - I initially thought my copy Mono Develop had got corrupted and trashed the icons by itself - now I find it's "an improvment"! Can't find any forward / back buttons for bookmarks though.

So an extra big thanks to all those geniuses who had a meeting and decided that functionality should be thrown out so that it can look more like Xcode! Xcode is a design classic then is it? IMHO Xcode is a good example of a non intuitive interface - probably by the same team who thought up the much loved Provisioning Profile system. :)

    Bring back the icons.

+1 bring back the icons, they were a good indicator whether you already saved and the revert and redo buttons were essential for me.

It's just bad UI design to remove a feature and not have the option to bring it back for those who liked it. Shame on them.

While I agree that the missing toolbar loses a lot of discoverability for Mono features, I'd suggest using F7 (Build Assembly) instead of Save or Save All. This not only saves all modified files, it also compiles them. This has saved me lots of round-trips back to the Unity editor only to discover syntax errors that need fixing.

Hey man, I STRONGLY AGREE WITH YOU!It's really a stupid idea to remove everything from the tool bar.

I strongly disagree with this change, it is really counter-intuitive to me. I don't want my code editor to look like the xcode-du-jour. I want it to look like a powerful text editor and have rows of buttons (half of which I'll never use), and I want it to be customisable, I want to be able to drag and drop buttons where I want them. Right now it looks like iTunes. Yuk!

If the dev thinks its better this way, that's their opinion.
If they want it to be the default setting, I got no problem with them choosing that too. It's their program.
But to not keep a setting tucked away in the preferences, of which there are many useless never looked at settings, is ridiculous and thoughtless.

I find it unbelievable that I'll now be looking at alternative external code editors for such a tiny omission.

I'm also *shocked* by this change. :(
It's very disturbing, mainly because it's geared towards xamarin workflow, not Unity one.

I use CTRL+S and the like, but always want to have the possibility to bring the toolbar back. :-(

EDIT: There is another free editor for C#, sharpdevelop http://www.icsharpcode.net/opensource/sd/
(unfortunately only for Windows despite being open source; I'm on Mac) :(

Do they care what users want or need ?
    No.

Very bad developer choice with this changes.

Had to downgrade to unity 4.2 to keep using the old Mono.

I hope they read users feedback and bring back the old interface and functions ( like drag marked text in the editor).

If there was only the toolbar that had disappeared.

    * Go to declaration is now limited on classes
    * folding are loosen after you save a file (it s very boring when you work on big script)

Yes They made a very bad choice to remove the toolbar. I noticed it right away. I focus mostly on the design and art side of development but I do have to do some coding at times and having simple things like a toolbar is very helpful. Sorry but not everyone is a Uber Code Guru and using "hotkeys" like mad!
So the developers wanted it to be more like "Xamarin"? Guess what, I don't know nor do I even care what "Xamarin" is. I care about making my Unity code "dappling" less frustrating. I hate this decision!

Guys I use to work VERY VISUALLY, why you remove the toolbars?!? I prefer to move the mouse to the icon and press save or back or undo. Now I will have to go to the obsoletes pulldown menus that exists since I have "computing" memory, and search the options, and for each options go to open the tedious menus. I don't want to invest time memorizing CTRL-This for this and CTRL-That for that. What happen when somebody changes the key layout? I will have to learn again all the combinations or again, go back to the menus.

I just move to Unity 4.3.3 expecting to see new things not that you remove functionality. Please put it back. If somebody doesn't like to work with toolbars, they always had the option to remove them or hide it, but now the ones that use to love to use it has no option. Please put it back.

This is seriously ridiculous. Removing features and user freedom is a terrible design choice. Adding an option for users to remove the toolbar would have been fine. There is no defense for removing the toolbars completely.

Is there any more word on this? It's arrogant and foolish for the designers to think that they know how people want to work. I love toolbars. The idea that they are somehow dated is ridiculous. What is dated is having to memorize and use keystroke combinations.

The edition of MonoDevelop that's shipped with Unity is very minimally modified from the official version developed by Xamarin.

Xamarin redesigned MonoDevelop's user interface for MD 4.0, and when we incorporated that into Unity, we inherited those changes - some people enjoy them, and some people don't.

The new mono develop is awful, with that huge bar at the top full of things I don't use, and gone is the toolbar of things that I do use. It's so bad, that I uninstalled it, and reinstalled the old one. I'd use something else, but I really like the error highlighting, and auto-suggestions. It links in with Unity really well, but the new version at least uses far too much real estate for no benefit.

Well, I don't actually use monodevelop, and never have done since I've never liked it or it's performed badly. Luckily, you don't have to either. You can use visual studio, sublime text 2/3 or any other ide of your choice. It's right that Unity are moving away from propriety editors they have to maintain. It's not really the engine's job to make an IDE as well.

If it's still a bit problematic you can actually find an asset on asset store that's an integrated IDE. Not sure if it would be fully featured though.

+1 on bringing back the option to have a toolbar. I also am a visual user and miss being able to quickly see if the script has been saved yet (colorful icon always in the same place) and find it clodgy to have to locate it in a drop down menu or manage key presses.

I don't care what changes are made to "improve" workflow as long as we still have the option to customize it back to what works best for us as individuals.

Your +1 will be fine - but you'll have to ask xamarin.
