Just a thread to say thank you for the work our volunteer moderators do for the community here. We appreciate your work to make this a safe, open place to discuss Unity and game development.

I know this is not a task that makes you popular. Most of the feed back you get is from the couple of disgruntled users, rather then the happy contented masses.

So as part of the happy contented masses, thank you. Keep up the good work.

Thanks a lot, we appreciate it. People don't see the 30-40 spam threads that are hoovered up every day, the countless pms requesting threads moved or merged and so on. We're not paid for it, and do it because it matters to us.

    @Thomas Pasieka (gsep?) @hippocoder, @Aurore

    Words of appreciation.

Unity forum moderators are clean and impartial.

If you check other game-engine forums, moderators are corrupt.
They want bribes, kick-backs, favouritism and so on.

That's an impartial reason why Unity community is growing.

Thank you for deleting spam, good job.

Not thank you for locking threads. It is lame. Especially if you see some threads that get crazy without any lock (e.g. Hatered thread, 8% of people blood related to Satan, should quarantine them all,...). I get the feeling a thread can get as crazy or offtopic as it wants, as long as it does not talk about the competition.

I have yet to see an UE4 mod closing a Unity thread. While I see the opposite all the time...
For me this is a kind of corruption, because it is good for UT but in my eyes not good for the community.
However, many thanks for letting the UE4 4.6 release thread live. I hope we will also be able to discuss the 4.7 release here.

OK this self congratulation has gone on long enough, where's my padlock button! ;)

    I'm joking guys!

Can you get forum spam blocking tools?

I know they would probably block my ideas posts but maybe there is a forum spam database doohickey that shares data between forums on spam, they must be cutting and pasting!

If there is not it's my idea don't steal it and make millions!

That already exists, which is why you don't see 95% of the spam. No spam blocking tool is 100% effective.

I'm sure 4.7 will raise some Unity related questions. Because it is the competition, comparing changes done is kind of important to evaluate where Unity stands.

In that case, we should have a thread for every single time any game engine releases any update. That'd make sense, right?

Or if you wanted to talk about another game engine, you could go use their forums? I'll leave this decision to Aurore, but as someone who browses these forums for my own personal game development on my evenings and weekends, I don't really want it to be full of threads not really relevant to Unity.

Doesn't it make sense that game developers want to discuss pros and cons of different tools and compare them? If you are worried multiple topics cluttering the forums why not make one topic for it, sticky it (because there seems to be a lot of discussion), and lock or delete all the other topics regarding it and direct the discussion to that one topic? I don't think anyone wants to talk specifically about other tools. They want to compare them with Unity. Isn't that a sensible thing to do?

edit: Almost forgot. I saw the spam and only a few moments later it was gone. Thank you mods, you are great.

As I've said in the past, moderators welcome feature comparison topics, provided they do not degenerate into flaming. For example, UE4 raises some interesting features like shaders for paper, see-through foliage and importantly very high speedtree performance. Those are for another thread though. We do not ban feature and technology discussions only the usual UE4 vs Unity.

Naturally, I investigate UE4 all the time. It's interesting, it's a superb engine. But I chose Unity for a lot of reasons. I'd love Unity to patch any weak spots too.

It would be prudent to open such a discussion with "speed tree rendering performance" and go from there rather than open it as "UE4 speed tree vs Unity speed tree" which is a bit much and has a way of attracting trolling. Just keep it focused on the technology and it's fine.

UE4 isn't a swear word. It's trying to create some sort of repeat of the old discussions that's bad, as it led to a whole lot of children thinking it was PC master race vs Consoles, when it's not.

You should have seen that crap last year, it would go on for hours during the day just flooding spam everywhere. Couldn't even find the new posts.

At least now they get it cleaned out in a somewhat timely manner rather than letting it happen for hours at a time.

......The Pimp. I dare you to find an image of an anthropomorphic shark with bling and a feathered hat. If you can complete this quest, you will have earned your title!

Seriously, though, definitely agreed. Thank you moderators for keeping the community running well and not being a spam/troll/unorganized den of inequity. Even more to the point, thank you Unity for giving us a A) great tool, and B) a place to come together to show off our projects and our ideas.

Also, special shout-outs to @Aurore for periodic awesome acknowledgements of the community, like the old 'IsTheNewGUIOutYet.com' site when the new GUI was becoming a thing, or her contributions to the Arabic Washing Machine Salesman meme.

This, the thing that ruins the conversation for everyone is the fights, we're not anti-Unreal or anti-other tech, we're anti-flame-war which ultimately is why we close them. The description of this forum includes discussions on game development, of course that includes other technology, we want you to be excited about them and talk about them in the right way without the fear of being trolled, I think hippo summed it all up really.

But ALAS this thread is not about that!

The mods are awesome but what is also awesome are all of you, I say this often and I'll say it again; BEST. COMMUNITY. EVER.

This also becomes difficult because there is a very fine line between what is really a flame war and what isn't. People do tend to get carried away but it is generally because they are very passionate about their technology. The tough part is separating those from the ones that are just doing it to be rude or get a rise out of others.

This situation remember me a technical Microsoft´s conference some years ago, in the begining the speaker says that is prohibited say the word "google", the developers in the room laugh and then the speakers says that is not a joke, and yes, it was not a joke.

And that's the reason why I asked why the Epic dev grant thread got closed. Because there was no flame war. It was in fact a healthy and interesting discussion, which wasn't even about Unity vs. Unreal.
But Hippocodder decided to close it down with the justification, it might lead to price comparisons.
Closing a thread because it potentially could go in a direction a certain moderator doesn't like is just silly IMO.

But whatever. It's your forum and your rules.

This. I played it for about ten minutes when it first came out and then decided I didn't like it. I use the name Ony (or the full version Onyxia) in several places (like Second Life when I was playing that) and people always say "oh, a WOW" player. Apparently there's a dragon in WOW named Onyxia. I just thought the name was kind of cool and everyone thinks I took it from WOW. It was pretty confusing at first when people would make "in" jokes that totally flew over my head.

    Annnnyway....

YES!! Thank you mods. For the last few days with all that spam showing up constantly, you've taken care of business and cleared it up. Awesome. You guys rock.
