Anyone who needs a tutorial to make an MMO is in no position to be attempting an MMO.

 

Agreed, but I wouldn't complain if someone who has experience created in-depth articles and other reference material.

Creating an MMO from scratch is a very in-depth process. He would need to explain everything as he is going through it to be a good tutorial, yet when I watched one of the entries in the series (where he sets up the database) he literally just went through the motions with zero explanation. If you don't know what you're doing this series won't help you.

 

To be fair he hasn't implemented much of anything in the series yet. He's literally just set up the bare essentials for socket communication. How much of it do you understand though? Can you explain the benefits and downsides of the approach he's taken?

See the problem with learning a subject the first time is you don't know what you need to know. Just as an example he's using the TCP protocol for socket communication, but it's not the only protocol available. The UDP protocol can be valid too. He's not given any explanation for why he choose one over the other.

If you have to talk to him directly to get the info you need then what's the point of the videos? Tutorials are supposed to teach you. If I just wanted to watch someone develop a program with no explanations I would watch a live stream of a developer.

if he is showing how he is making the way he would do it then why would he need to explain UDP? Hes not using UDP so no explanation would be need as to why he is using one over another. maybe this is why so many tutorials i have watched the creators of them get burned out by explaining things no one cares to know. i guess if you wnat a more in depth pro video series with all kinds of jabber jabber jabber (do you understand anything that guy just said ... nope and now im asleep). i personally do not like all the explaining i learn by watching and doing so it is all opinion based really and my opinion is he he doing a great job by SHOWING his work and not just showing his face, blocking the screen and crap quality of the video. I can see his work every step of the way and he explains it enough for me to understand and that is all that matters for ME. YOU may be different in how YOU learn

Nothing wrong with making or watching an MMO tutorial series. Just don't expect to be able to build your own MMO after following a tutorial series anymore than you could expect to build your own Ferrari after watching a few youtube videos either.

Tutorials are to teach the viewer how to create something. Undoubtedly what the viewer intends to create is not going to be identical to what the tutorial walks through. So core design choices like TCP, which all the higher level networking is going to be built upon, would be nice to get a discussion and touch on the alternatives. TCP isn't going to be a good choice for many MMO games, so it would be nice for the tutorial to say why it is the right choice for the game being made in the tutorial.

And if you're going to lie about it at least have the intelligence to not use the same name! There would have been nothing wrong with coming in here and saying you are starting this MMO tutorial series and asking what people think of it. .

 

You must not have had many people asking you for tutorials on a subject. We have hundreds of people coming through here on a yearly basis wanting to start game development and none of them want to build their game exactly like a series shows it. They want a series to teach them but this series won't teach them. I simply can't recommend it as it is now.

Okay Guys sorry for this. My intention was to self advertise and i went about it the wrong way and made it appear as if i was lying. I truly do apologize for this and i would like to begin fresh and ask you for opinions about what i am doing and how i should or can do things for you to have more interest in my series.

Being critical of something isn't being harsh. Understanding the criticism of others is one of the best ways to improve whatever you're creating.

There's over a million German speakers in the USA by the way.

It's always possible that you're a different individual but I'm doubtful. Signing in with the normal account you claim to have would lend more credibility to your statements, yet here you are continuing to use a completely different account and one that just happened to be chosen the very day they decided to post their tutorial series.

That aside you've both been making many of the same grammatical errors. It's not evidence on its own but it's very odd.
