Isn't the day after Christmas day a holiday in the US? It's here in sweden and we aren't even a religious country like the states

No such thing as religious countries but celebrating christmas shouldn't be something people feel they can't do. It's a party, you have fun, and its been going for quite a long time as a fun tradition. I'll pretty much celebrate them all :)

Or I could obnoxiously screech: "TW: nuanced annual festive activity of your optionally identified class" but I won't.

But it must be frustrating being a medical doctor in the states, they thank god instead of the surgeon :p

Edit: totally agree though, Christmas is about eggnod and present :) and happy kids

Since I got kids Christmas feels more like it used to when I was a kid myself. Well, except the waiting part, when I was a kid I remembered it took for ever for santa to come, first the grown ups need to go through the entire Christmas buffe :) now days it feels like the day is over before it started :)

Mostly just quoting my favorite Christmas story.

I don't know what you are on about. Christmas is the time for sun, beach and BBQs. Its not really Christmas if someone doesn't get sunburnt.

We don't really start back up after Christmas until mid January. Even then its touch and go, February is usually a better bet.

No, it's just a celebration that's merely monetised. The reason it matters more than "making your kids happy all year" is because all your kids friends are also celebrating the same thing. And everyone around them. It's a fantastic experience for children and religion is optional, regardless.

I'll also celebrate Ramadan and pretty much anything else people let me be a part of.

Got a hot tip. Don't talk about your date/partner online, there's never a good reason to, specially if you just got together.

There are a few eastern European religions that still use the Julian calendar instead of the Georgian calendar. This puts their December 25 on about our January 7.

Well yes, I am aware of, only thing I don't know, which countries are.
Sure I could just check search engine.
But I think my question and following response can be beneficial for others too as well.

However, I am little confused, when I look at this calendar list, for selected Switzerland.

    And this is Julian Calendar.

Hmm it is interesting phrase de facto holiday :D

    According to
    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Public_holidays_in_Sweden
"The day before an official holiday is in most cases treated as a de facto holiday in two variants, full day and half day."

I know in some countries, de facto prhase is used generally as meaning in fact.

Ah yeah, we got two levels of holiday those that count as Sundays (I guess from our protestant days) and those that count like Saturdays. 24th is counted as a Saturday so that's make sense.

When I was a kid in the 80s nothing was open on Sundays but that's not the case anymore so the system has lost most of its meaning.

De facto normally means "in practice, but not legally". So a de facto couple is one living together, but not married. A de facto holiday is one that is celebrated, but not legally enshrined.

Here in Melbourne, the day before the Melbourne cup is a de facto holiday. Its not officially a public holiday, but most people don't work.
