Mecanim Rig Configure - working but why some vertices shooting all over the place?

    I'm using Mecanim's Humanoid Rig to well rig a character from a 3d modelling company. I was supplied with an FBX which i thought would be easy to rig up for Mecanim. Please take a look at the pictures, why are some vertices shooting off at weird angles and long distances.The model looks fine when viewed through the Project hierarchy with no animation..

    Does anyone know why the vertices are flying off ? Is Mecanim or the model ?
