Material Name Prefixes

    This is something I just can't get my head around so any support would be greatly appreciated.

    If I choose to import mesh materials based on the material names rather than texture names, why can't I choose to not have prefixes before my material names?

    The problem is that I have to continually add objects to my Unity scene and I want them all to use the same unity materials, but I can not keep overwriting past meshes. This means that every time I import a model I get a bunch of new unity materials even though it should share the same .mats as the last imported mesh.

    I can't think of many situations where I'd want unity to continually add prefixes to my imported material names, so I ask, Is there an option to change this somehow? We are using a paid version of unity and this issue is costing us a lot of time.
