Massive difference in frame rate of editor and build

When I run my game in editor mode I get a very inconsistent frame rate, of about 45-55 fps. There is a pretty intensive mechanic that when used drops the frame rate to around 30-40 fps. I recently created a build with an fps counter to see what the frame rate is when it is a standalone game because I was noticing a massive difference. It manages a consistent 60 fps, and the mechanic has almost no effect on the frame rate. Is it normal to have this much difference when playing the build and in the editor? The editor frame rate sometimes drops to around 10 fps and it is very hard to test. What can I do to make the editor frame rate match the build?

The editor should not be used to test performance.

Nothing; the editor has overhead that a build doesn't have, since there's no editor stuff to worry about in a build. The most you can do is make sure the scene view isn't active, so things aren't rendered twice.
