I have the perpetual Unity 4 Pro+iOS licences, never upgraded to Unity 5 because it was absurdly expensive.
Now I finally got my offer, and would like to make sense of it:

    a) US$ 3000 worth of licences I paid in the past is now equal to 3 free months of Pro, or US$ 375.
I was hoping to get a permanent cut in the subscription price. I remember reading we would get a lower price and after a year would OWN the current released version forever, even if we cancel the subscription.

    b) Something that was perpetual is not anymore.
After 3 months, with no substantial benefit, my perpetual licence is officially dead.
Even if I don't do anything, it dies in April anyway.

Truth is, my perpetual licence is gone! It's worth nothing.
Lucky me I did not upgrade from 4 to 5.

    :(

Your post does make much sense or you haven't done any research and skipped all the news.

Your Unity 4 perpetual is... still a perpetual license and nothing has changed, same goes for people with 5 perpetual, they own all 5.x versions for good.

There was a 40% off the subscription cost for 2 years offer which expired a couple days ago, with it Unity 2017 for 2 years would have been around the same or less cost that U4/U5 with addons was.

    Also from FAQ:

"If you subscribe to the new Unity Pro for a minimum of 24 consecutive months, you get to keep the version you have if you notify us that you are stopping your subscription, and choosing pay to own. At that point, you will stop receiving access to Pro tier services, new features and upgrades. You will receive the next 3 patches. We reserve the right to grant access to additional patches in the event that we find severe bugs. If you later resume subscribing, you will still own the perpetual license you elected but again start receiving updates, fixes and services. Once you have subscribed for another 24 consecutive months, and should you then elect to cease this new subscription, you will then be granted a new perpetual license of the then current version of Unity."

Unity 4 perpetual died a long time ago anyway. 4.7 was the last release in the 4.x cycle.

Unity 5 perpetual is still relevant, and will be till the end of the 5.x cycle.

After that everyone moves onto a subscription. If you don't like that, you don't have to join in. You can stay on the 5.x or 4.x version forever. Your existing perpetual lisences are still valid.

What the others said and also, maybe you don't need Pro anymore and Plus would be enough.

Or the personal edition, which has all the same engine features. You can buy plus or pro when you are ready to publish if you want to get rid of the splash screen.
