I'll join in for a bit of harmless fun.

There are plenty of historical case studies of founder CEO's stepping aside for experienced executives from public companies prior to IPOs. They know how to talk to the major institutions who'll buy the majority of any IPO stock and the investment banks who would underwrite such a deal, as well as providing potential investors comfort by having a public company executive at the helm. John's appointment seems to fit this pattern.

There has been a lot of tech news to support the conspiracy theories out there that Microsoft and Unity are becoming too good a fit. But an all-out acquisition isn't necessary. Microsoft bought a minority share in Facebook and got integration. I wouldn't be surprised if Microsoft participated in an IPO and became a significant minority investor.

So my best guess would be an IPO announcement, followed later by Microsoft participating in that IPO.

That is entirely too reasonable a suggestion for an internet forum post. ;)

I shall counter with: Unity has been doing better than anyone believes and instead of Microsoft buying Unity, Unity is buying Microsoft!

I also think it has something to do with Microsoft. But contrary to what most people believe, I think it could turn out to be a pretty positive and productive partnership.

Microsoft released mobile Office and other tools for all other platforms, and recently updated OpenCLR to build on Linux. I wouldn't worry about a partnership, as MS are now more of a services/hardware company.

Not sure IPOs or buyouts are the sort of thing you announce at GDC (unless you're the one doing the buying, perhaps).

Looking at Graham's car analogy, you'd be forgiven for thinking someone's getting something somewhere. Perhaps they're ditching the Pro add-ons in favour of all-in-one Pro licenses.

They've already said shut up already about that ;)

    Partnerships are not buyouts.

Car analogies are like gearboxes. They have many speed settings, and some go backwards.

This would get a growing number of people I know to buy Pro.

They're constantly forming partnerships so it would have to be something extra special. Dunno...whatever it is, it warrants a hyped-up Minion, so it must be good... I'm baited :)

So long as it's not Unity 6! ;)

sounds reasoneable (from a MS view point) but this can be a bit complicate for a indie developer make games with pro for MS platforms and use the free for the others.

I'm personally hoping for the Team License to be subsidized for people who want to integrate PlasticSCM with Unity but not have to buy every contractor I want to hire a $500 *non transferable* license for the "integration fee".

    What, too specific? :)

I think he'll declare world peace, the end of extreme financial inequality, immeditate termination if insane Orwellian global surveillance, and ceasing massive and destructive exploitation of natural resources - after all, that's what realizing Unity is all about, isn't it?

    ... ... ... oh wait - this isn't the Enlightenment forum? Darn!

Well, never mind ... Unity is, always has been and ever will be. Regardless of what the announcement might say, we are forever free!

Just import the 3d data for where you live and the route to work add a navmesh and vehicle controller. Put laser scanner on car import colliders into scene as you go and press play!

PS probably want to capture GPS and orientation data as feedback to update the actual position of the vehicle.

TADA Unity can drive you to work and back*

    * Unity may need to have a chat with the DVLA to get a game engine driving license.

Navmesh could be a bit limiting. Try raycasting in the direction of travel instead.

A-ha. Now we know it. The announcement is:

Unity can now drive your car. And if you buy Unity Pro, you get a Gallardo on top. For free! Of course!!!

Do you have pre-orders? Can I bribe you? I really don't want to wait! I'll take three. For different colors, you see?

Or the other way around! And a merger with Microsoft! Free ponies with every add-on purchase!

But seriously, if Sweeney is going to do the announcement it might be something fairly big.

    That is a bold move.

UT has to really come up with something sexy (license price drops for example) at GDC if they don't want to lose momentum.

Unity's choice of pricing is much more limiting for them. Epic stands to make it all back through royalties, but Unity only receives a one-time payment per platform per developer.

I'm going to update my prediction that the Unity announcement will be that MS will allow every XBox One to be a development machine and that you can use Unity Pro for free. I'd put money on it.

It wouldn't surprise me given the fact that Microsoft has stated they were interested in doing so. There are also a few news articles covering the idea.

John Riccitiello (in a alternate reality)

    - "Unity Technologie has created a $10,000,000 fund to provide grants ranging from $5,000 to $50,000 to select projects being built with and around Unity 5"
    Yeah !!!!!

    - "Unity Technologie has decided to drop the subscription price to 40$"
Yeah again. Well done M. Riccitiello :p

Wow free money with Unreal so to counter that Unity will probably need to opt for a Pay to develope with Unity Pro.

Say $20 per hour rate for all game developers using Unity on projects deemed good enough?!?

The Epic Grants is a smart love by Epic. They are going to give money to the most promising UE4 based games, which will help those games succeed and the Epic will grab the 5% royalties from those games. Epic Grants will pay for itself pretty quickly, and generate a ton of buzz in the process. I'm guessing this is what will be talked about, but it is possible Epic might also launch UE4.7 at the same time. That build has been in preview for quite a while already.

I don't see Unity doing a grants program. The grants works for Epic's business model, since Epic get 5% royalties. Without a royalty of some kind in Unity, a grant program would simply be a money giveaway. I seriously doubt Unity will do a grant program.

I definitely expect to see Unity address the subscription price and some of the terms, though. More than anything else, I expect Unity will announce that Unity Pro 5 will include all of the Pro platform add-ons (iOS and Android) in the base price. The $1500 price is fine, but the $1500 per add-on platform is not.
